Mayor's Message: The New Kid on the Block
By now most of us, we mere mortals, understand the nature, persistence and tenacity of a virus.
By now most of us, we mere mortals, understand the nature, persistence and tenacity of a virus. One does not need membership in the Mayo Clinic, the CDC, the WHO, the NIH or other medical agencies to see the effects of a constantly-mutating virus that seems transformed into a new species altogether. The question becomes as we attempt to do our due diligence, are we protected by the vaccine for the emergence of one new strain after another? I don’t know about you but I always try to “follow the science”. With so many medical experts spewing advice that number like the various strains of coronavirus, it is confusing as we seek the Nirvana of normal living and our collective livelihood.
A virus is a very small “germ.” These germs are smaller than bacteria. Due to the evolving nature of viruses, it is always difficult for the medical researchers to constantly come up with quick cures for these buggers since they are constantly mutating into new types of organisms. That is why there is no cure for the common cold, the flu and even warts (yes, they are considered viral). As an interesting note, some virologists and biologists consider viruses to be a separate life form or an organism on the “edge of life.” In other words, they evolve through the process of natural selection. They carry genetic material and reproduce. However they lack a cell structure (considered a necessary characteristic of life). This seems like the stuff that is the basis for science fiction.
“Flurona”
Every year as expected, the “the flu season” has again paid us a visit like clockwork. Flu cases have been steadily rising. Medical experts and health officials have been quietly observing the suspected causal connection between these two viruses. Not surprising, we now have the new variant of this “ twindemic” – the so-called “Flurona” variant. Just what exactly are the potential health implications of this new double dose of infection? Coronavirus and influenza can either or both be fatal. The degree of severity is dependent on the health and sustainability of our immune system. There is general agreement among the medical experts that being fully vaccinated may lessen the severity of the viral symptoms. Also the highly contagious Omicron variant which continues to reach epic proportions of infections raises more concern with the new variant. Those with underlying health conditions are more at risk.
The mode of transmission occurs through very small aerosolized droplets expelled from coughing, sneezing, singing, speaking – even just breathing. Poorly- fitted masks may be one source of further transmission. Is it any wonder that our recent holiday gatherings have catapulted these high positive numbers?
Recently, I just received word that two friends who are opposed to vaccines and were very “careful” to avoid the virus by masking are now positive and have symptoms. We must all make personal choices to vaccinate or not, or accept potential government mandates which one may consider an infringement of their right under the Constitution. Yes the controversy rages onward. Let us be mindful of protection for our children, friends, families and especially any gatherings of which we may be a participant.
I wish all of you peace and good health and always smile with love in your heart.
Mayor John L. Madden
P.S. Due to my increasingly difficult schedules and time constraints, I have decided to contribute my message periodically rather than on a weekly basis starting in this New Year. Thank You.

Mayor's Message: The New Face of Covid-19
As the holiday festivities wind down and we begin to settle in for the new year, what can we expect for 2022?
As the holiday festivities wind down and we begin to settle in for the new year, what can we expect for 2022? To use a trite expression – this is “déjà vu” all over again, perhaps round three. By now most of us have expected that the pandemic is in our rear view mirror. However, we are now facing the raging Omicron variant which spreads more easily and faster than the other variants. This new onslaught is causing a significant strain to health care and hospital facilities. Most urgent care facilities are already overwhelmed as long lines are commonplace. Covid testing kits are unavailable now in many places for home testing.
Breakthrough infections are likely to occur in people who are fully vaccinated. In addition, due to the changed genetic makeup of Omicron, some treatments may now be less effective for providing full protection. As we know, viral strains will always transform through a mutation process with the end result- a new emergent strain.
New CDC Guidelines
Everyone 5 years and older should get fully vaccinated.
Everyone 18 years and older should get the booster shot at least 2 months after their initial J&J vaccine or 6 months after the twin vaccine series ( Pfizer or Moderna ).
Masks should be worn in all indoor public settings in substantial or high community settings.
Recommendations for isolation/ quarantine with those who tested positive with Covid are now reduced from 10 to 5 days. The science reveals that viral infection of transmission occurrence starts early in the course of the illness (generally 1-2 days prior to symptoms and 2-3 days after the symptoms ).
Unvaccinated individuals or those without receiving a second dose after 6 months or 2 months after the J&J vaccine or not yet boosted, the CDC recommends quarantine for 5 days. Those with the booster need not quarantine following exposure. The CDC recommends however that a Covid test should be performed thereafter. With the occurrence of symptoms, immediately quarantine followed by a Covid test. Retesting should be done until a negative result is achieved.
Blame Human Nature and Social importance
Researchers generally agree that social interaction is vital to the human condition. This characteristic feature is essential to every aspect of our health-emotionally, physically and psychologically. Having a strong network of support of family and community bonds promotes physical and emotional health necessary in our lives. Yes, this is what the holidays are yielding.
For the new year, let’s hope that all our personal challenges will only last as long as our New Year’s resolutions.
May the New Year bring you happiness, peace, prosperity, comfort and love.
Mayor John L. Madden

From the Mayor: My Holiday Message to You
Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to you all. This is the exciting time of year when families and friends will gather to share…
Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to you all. This is the exciting time of year when families and friends will gather to share their stories of what transpired in their lives during the year. Travel plans will be made as we look forward to being with our loved ones, perhaps experiencing an unexpected but delightful “nouvelle cuisine” from a family chef. These are the moments that we eagerly await as the season unfolds which will yield those unforgettable lasting memories that we so cherish.
Yuletide Reminiscing
Growing up in an Italian household, the Christmas season transformed our house, especially the kitchen into a gaggle of assiduous activity. By now this whirlwind of frantic industry was an anticipated event every year. I had come to the conclusion that this was the new meaning of the “huddled masses.” Who organized all this chaotic exuberance anyway? But with this excitement and purpose the adults indeed had a game plan to prepare the feast, crack open the home made wine aging in the basement and continue to decorate the last available square inch of doors, walls and windows. In all this, the goal was to make that season more festive, glorious and memorable than the year before.
Sitting down for the meal was always a venerated ritual as grace was said (sometimes in Latin) before others spoke a few words of thanks and good health to the family. After a short period of time, our grandfather would always manage to sneak some of that red wine to us without any fanfare. I guess it made us feel like adults.
As we finally made our way to the well decorated tree, we scanned about to see which presents were mine as well as the others. It was always a special time for us if we received a new gift. It was common to get hand-me-downs of clothing, toys or a bicycle. In all these were the fond memories that stay with me today.
Holidays, 2022
This Holiday Season suggests that we reflect on this past year with gratitude with the great hope that next year will be far less challenging, restore our lives to pre-pandemic activity and bring prosperity to our aspirations once again.
Please think about those in our community who are alone and struggling to provide for their families. Although we may be facing an uncertain environment next year, our community spirit of resilience will again prevail. By sharing a gesture of kindness such as sharing a meal or consider an impromptu visit will easily turn a frown upside down.
Finally, say a prayer for all of our first responders, and those in uniform especially overseas, for their safekeeping. They need to know that they are not forgotten.
May your Christmas and Holiday celebration bring you warmth, happiness and an abundance of love.
“Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” – Marcel Proust

December "Homes of the Month"
…One way to brighten up your lives after this difficult year is to drive around Middlesex and see all the beautiful lights adorning homes for this holiday season.
Although 2021 brought us the vaccinations and boosters against Covid-19 we are still not ‘back to normal’ as the virus still is causing havoc through-out our nation. Many natural disasters also hit our nation hard this year including Hurricane Ida which slammed into our town in September causing hardship for so many residents whose homes were devastated with flooding. Our hearts go out to those who lost so much in the flood waters.
One way to brighten up your lives after this difficult year is to drive around Middlesex and see all the beautiful lights adorning homes for this holiday season. The Beatification Committee has selected the following homes as ‘Homes of the Month’. The selection was difficult since there were so many beautiful decorations all through-out our town.
2021 is quickly coming to a close and the ‘Homes of the Month’ program hangs up their hats until next spring. The Beautification Committee sincerely wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season and a blessed 2022 New Year.
The Middlesex Beautification Committee drives around town and nominates homes. For more information, visit the Beatification Committee page here.

Message from Mayor Madden: Autumn Harvest or Thanksgiving
“…Let us enrich ourselves with the abundance and goodwill within our DNA. After all, gratitude and giving are the most significant acts that we can express to one another.”
Early English settlers brought the idea of Autumn Harvest Thanksgiving to North America. Typically, the celebration is held at the end of the harvest season with a big meal called the harvest supper, prayers of thanks along with a bountiful harvest and a termination of the work involved during the growing and harvesting of the crops.
The most widely acknowledged event of the first Thanksgiving was between the Wampanoag Indians and the recently arrived English Colonists during the Autumn Harvest in 1621 at Plymouth, Massachusetts. However the best documented account was from a letter written by an English Settler, Edward Winslow on December 11, 1621. He wrote this letter to a friend who just arrived from England carrying supplies to the New World. In the letter, he details the types of food that both the Indians and the colonists shared from the harvest. They also shared in one another’s traditions and folkways. This was the culmination of all the hard work to be enjoyed by all who participated in the harvest.
During the Revolutionary War, Congress declared this day as a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1777. America (the United Colonies) called for this National Day to also celebrate the Continental Army’s victory over the British in the battle of Saratoga. In 1789, George Washington again called for a national day of thanks to coincide on the last Thursday of November to commemorate the end of the Revolutionary War. In addition this was the time to also extol and praise the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. This was important to Washington so as to start the tradition of giving thanks as a nation.
Of the Founders of the Constitution, our third President, Thomas Jefferson refused to endorse this tradition in 1801. He absolutely despised the event. He felt that to support Thanksgiving meant supporting a state-sponsored religion which is a faith-based tradition in the spirit of Christianity. He was a vocal proponent of a clear separation of Church and State.
Later, during the War between the States (the Civil War), both the Confederacy and the Union issued Proclamations to commemorate “Thanksgiving Day” following major victories. This was followed by the formal observance of Thanksgiving Day as declared in 1863 by Abraham Lincoln as he reflected the devastation and horrors of the War. He referenced his appeals of termination of the war to “Divine Countenance” to save the nation and bring about lasting peace.
As the most quintessentially recognized American Holiday, Thanksgiving has significantly evolved from its deeply religious roots of fasting, prayers and the gathering for a memorable repast. Although one common thread remains today – sharing a meal with family and friends while enjoying their all too infrequent visits. Preparations are always a lot of work. Do not allow stress to enter into your heart. We do have much to be thankful for, that this one day should be devoted to all our achievements and reflect upon all our blessings that are rarely realized, appreciated and that life is really short. Let us enrich ourselves with the abundance and goodwill within our DNA. After all, gratitude and giving are the most significant acts that we can express to one another.
“Be thankful for what you have. Your life is someone else’s fantasy.” – Wale Ayeni
Thank you and enjoy Thanksgiving.
Mayor John L. Madden
Weekly Message from the Mayor: Municipal Master Plan 101
“Since New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the union, strategic planning is even more crucial. Public participation is also important to help determine the future goals of its residents…”
This most preeminent document which a town is dependent upon for growth and development is vital for a specified direction that residents can plan for their future. It lays down a predetermined blueprint for current land uses focusing on both conservation and controlled growth for the community. Therefore, it affects all aspects that impact the quality of life that we call home. These aspects include:
efficient use of roadways,
guidelines for a clean and sustainable environment,
efficient zoning regarding land use including commercial and residential development and densities,
open space,
recreational areas,
cultural, historic and heritage resources,
transportation and traffic issues,
public facilities,
infrastructure issues,
flood control planning,
and many other areas that require careful planning and implementation.
These considerations will ultimately impact on our property values and taxes.
Public Participation is Important
New Jersey communities are required to reexamine their master plans and land use regulations at least every six years. Middlesex Borough conducts their Master Plan every ten years. Since New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the union, strategic planning is even more crucial. Public participation is also important to help determine the future goals of its residents.
Although only one public hearing is required, I urge our residents to consider active participation for this important event. Since one of many goals incorporate controlled growth and planned development, shared values are necessary to establish specific goals and objectives thereby continuing to enhance the characteristics of our town. These visions help in the planning process. Residents can appreciate how their town will thrive in the future by the public participation process.
New Jersey Statutory Laws
New Jersey is considered a significant “home rule” State meaning that New Jersey laws provide broad powers to municipal governments to regulate certain aspects of this quality-of-life scenario to protect public health, safety and welfare through local planning, resolutions and ordinances. The NJMLUL (New Jersey Municipal Land Use Law) initially passed in 1975 defines the areas of responsibilities of local Zoning and Planning Boards giving municipalities the power to enact ordinances to zone and plan in preparation of their Master Plan. In Middlesex Borough, that power belongs to the JLUB (Joint Land Use Board).
I will cover much more on the process and considerations in preparation for the Master Plan. Our committee is already established and we will be meeting with our Municipal Planner, Mr. Paul Ricci soon to start this important Plan.
Thank you,
Mayor John L. Madden

Mayor's Message: Middlesex Borough Tax Assessment Office
We welcome Ms. Dawn Guttschall who has provided an exemplary resume backed up by solid experience.
Residents are always concerned with how their municipal taxes are derived and who is tasked with coming up with those numbers. In fact each year the biggest issue has always been about property taxes. Of the total property taxes for the Borough, the municipal tax rate is still under 10%. This represents a very small piece of the total pie for taxpayers.
The importance of providing and utilizing accurate data in the determination of valid property assessments becomes extremely important here. Since tax assessors are very well versed in real estate, such tools come in handy to determine market value of a property. Therefore all properties within the municipality will be assessed utilizing any combination of three types of valuation (of which real estate “comps” is one type). These “comps” are based on bona fide sales transactions in a free market based on the concept of Ad Valorem or value as driven by this free market. That is why assessed values will ultimately be used to calculate the tax rate and therefore our composite property tax.
It is important to understand that the various types of properties require different types of assessment to make sure these assessments are of fair market value and provide equal valuation as per the property type. For instance, farm assessment will not share the same value as raw land or a lot in which an existing house stands. The goal is to apply each type of valuation method to the type of property to yield a fair and equitable valuation across the board. Vacant land is appraised typically at a lower value than a comparable property with a structure or house on it. However, raw land with access to public services such as gas, water and sewers on the property will be assessed at a higher value. A tax assessor may feel that since this type of property has the potential to be developed may justify a higher assessment.
Enter the Tax Assessor
As you can see the role of tax assessor require much expertise and responsibility.
With the departure of our tax assessor, Mr. Tom Reilly who took retirement, we are grateful to find an equally committed, well rounded expert to fill his shoes. We welcome Ms. Dawn Guttschall who has provided an exemplary resume backed up by solid experience.
Her diverse experience includes her participation on the Somerset County Tax Board as the Deputy Tax Collector. She is currently a member of the Bridgewater Board of Adjustment.
As the part time Tax Assessor in Dunellen, she currently oversees their annual tax reassessment program. A significant advantage here is that she already has a good working relationship with the same firm who will be administering our revaluation next year. This was last done approximately 36 years ago. This is very important as it will engender the necessary communication to make this large Borough-wide task more manageable and efficient. I believe that Middlesex Borough is very fortunate to have her especially now for this impending event. Welcome to our community as we look forward to working with you. Her email is: taxassessor@middlesexboro-nj.gov.
Thank you,
Mayor John L. Madden

How to Appeal a FEMA Disaster Assistance Decision
New Jersey survivors affected by flooding caused by remnants of Hurricane Ida who have registered for disaster assistance may receive a letter from FEMA stating they are ineligible. However, this does not have to be the final word.
If an applicant believes FEMA’s decision was incorrect, they can file an appeal with FEMA. Applicants must appeal initial eligibility determinations within 60 days of the date on their eligibility notification letter. The first step is for applicants to read their determination letter carefully to understand why FEMA decided the application was “ineligible.” Many times, it could be something as simple as providing missing documents or information.
UPDATED FRIDAY Sep. 24
FEMA: No Duplication of Benefits
When determining the amount of federal disaster assistance an applicant may be eligible for, FEMA will verify there are no “Duplication of Benefits.” By law, FEMA cannot provide financial assistance when any other source, such as insurance, has provided assistance for the same disaster-caused need or when such assistance is available from another source.

2) Survey: Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA)
Borough OEM Collecting Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA) for FEMA
Middlesex Borough is being asked by NJ Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to collect information which helps them get a picture of what damage has occurred to individual dwellings. We have created an easy, 12-question survey that will help to do that. Please read the below and then click on the form if you have sustained any kind of damage from the storm.
NOTES:
This does NOT take the place of residents working with their private homeowners/renters insurance companies. Likewise, this survey and your responses have nothing to do with insurance nor the dollar value to the damage assigned.
Responses will be kept confidential and will only be sent on to NJOEM
This is not mandatory for residents but encouraged.
These survey results are a tool used by FEMA to gather information about the extent of the damage and will help the county and state get the right dollar amounts allocated to different programs. The data collected would support potential federal declaration requests to FEMA for programs like the Individuals and Households Program (IHP) which provides financial and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by a disaster.
If you should have any questions about this survey, please contact the Borough Office of Emergency Management at jcosta@middlesexboro-nj.gov. If you would rather fill this form out on paper, you can either print it and drop it off at Borough Hall (1200 Mountain Ave.) or you can come to Borough Hall and fill it in.

5) PSE&G STEPS TOWARD gas service RESTORATION
Attention residents: PSE&G has proactively turned off gas service to parts of our area out of safety concerns due to the scope of flood damage. Some customers who did not experience flooding will also have their gas service turned off. We have done this out of an abundance of caution and to ensure a safe restoration process.
On Sept. 3, PSE&G began proactively turning off gas service to customers with extensive flooding out of safety concerns due to the widespread damage caused by extensive flooding of nearby rivers. Restoring gas service after flooding is a time-consuming, multiday process. Some customers may not have gas service for an extended period of time.
Some customers who did not experience flooding will also have their gas service turned off, out of an abundance of caution and to ensure a safe restoration process. PSE&G is prioritizing the restoration of customers who did not experience flooding. PSE&G will prioritize your restoration. Please call PSE&G at 1-800-350-7734 to schedule an appointment for gas service to be restored.
According to PSE&G, critical steps to restoring your natural gas service if you experienced significant flood damage:
☑ Your town’s municipal inspector will visit your location and perform an inspection.
a. Township inspectors will make rounds in some towns. If you have questions about the inspection process, please call your township’s municipal office or office of emergency management.
b. If your home or business passes inspection, the inspector should notify you and PSE&G that your service is ready to be inspected, repaired or replaced. It is not necessary to call PSE&G for scheduling in this situation.
c. If your property fails inspection, you must have a qualified contractor make repairs and then be re-inspected by the municipal inspector.
☑ If your electric panel was affected by flooding - it must be inspected, repaired, re-inspected and turned on before gas service can be restored.
Both of these steps must take place before PSE&G crews can turn on your natural gas service. PSE&G will not restore natural gas-fed appliances that have been exposed to flood water. Please keep in mind PSE&G will need clear access to your natural gas meter and gas appliances for close inspection, repair or replacement. If we cannot access the natural gas meter, we will not be able to restore your natural gas service.
If a gas appliance fails inspection, we will apply a violation tag and disconnect the appliance from the gas piping. Customers are responsible for having equipment repaired or replaced and
re-inspected. When your inspection is complete, or repairs have been made, call PSE&G at 1-800-350-7734 to schedule an appointment for appliance connection.

Mayor Madden's Weekly Message: Tax Time – A Guide For Residents
The quarterly tax season is upon us. That said, some confusion and bewilderment among taxpayers may occur.
The quarterly tax season is upon us once again. Tax time can often cause some confusion and questions among our taxpayers.
Property taxes are the lifeblood that support municipal and county government operations, as well as the school district operations. The total amount of tax is determined each year to provide sufficient revenue to offset and balance the budgeted expenses of the activities and operations of these entities.
The municipality is responsible for collecting the full sum of all these taxes and then distributing a portion to the other entities. The school receives their portion on a monthly basis, while the county receives their portion on a quarterly basis.
The portion of municipal taxes that the Borough has control over will be used to fund Borough wide expenses such as Garbage Collection, Bulk Pickup, Snow Plowing, Police & Fire operations, Salaries, Fire Hydrants, Street Lighting, OEM, Sewer operations, etc. As a side note, many of our surrounding towns will outsource the burden of some of these municipal services, such as garbage, sewer and snow plowing, to an outside company. This will cause an additional cost to their residents. Middlesex Borough residents on the other hand enjoy these services through their property taxes without the additional costs.
The average assessed value of a home in Middlesex is currently 100,100 which translates to a property tax bill of $9,648.64 for 2021.
The distribution of those property taxes is as follows:
|
Municipal/Borough |
$ 2,715.71 |
|
County |
$ 1,277.28 |
|
County Open Space |
$105.10 |
|
School |
$ 5,434.44 |
|
Public Library |
$116.11 |
Tax Rate Breakdown Comparison
| 2020 RATE | 2021 RATE | |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal/Borough Tax | 2.721 | 2.713 |
| County Tax | 1.130 | 1.276 |
| County Open Space Tax | 0.095 | 0.105 |
| School | 5.372 | 5.429 |
| Public Library | 0.104 | 0.116 |
The Municipal tax rate was the only tax rate that saw a decrease between 2020 and 2021.
I want to thank Ms. Darcy DelVecchio, our Tax Collector and Ms. Caroline Benson, our Acting Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer for their efficient guidance and professionalism during tax time.
Thank you,
Mayor John L. Madden

Weekly Message from the Mayor: Post-Flood Cleanup and Zoning
“Since Ida paid us a destructive visit, our Department of Public Works (DPW) has been very responsive with multiple pickup of flood damaged debris removal… In addition, our Construction Office has been incredibly busy processing applications for permits.”
Since Ida paid us a destructive visit, our Department of Public Works (DPW) has been very responsive with multiple pickups of flood damaged debris removal. Some residences have seen four return visits by our DPW crew of their flood damaged property knowing that removal and repair of their homes have been slow as resources permit.
Some of the problems stem from supply chain issues regarding parts/material/systems availability. Even inflation is affecting the price of many supply chain goods. Other delays relate to the overwhelmed contracting services available placing an incredible immediate demand on said services.
Again, our DPW has repeatedly answered the call for all the flood damaged pickup. Great leadership and efficient repeat effort has mitigated the “war zone” appearance. My thanks go out to Lenny Vidal for his effort and guidance. At this juncture, there are only a handful of residents who are still in this cleanup process.
Unfortunately, some other residents are taking advantage of the emergency cleanup process by placing at the curb non-flood related material hoping that our DPW will automatically pick it up as well. Not only is this a violation of our Borough codes but it is a violation of our zoning laws. The cost for the storm cleanup is enormous along with personnel time involved including overtime.
The Borough has suspended the permit fees with construction applications as we have in severe storms of the past.
Some of the aforementioned violations include placing roofing shingles, vinyl siding, paint cans or other construction related debris at the curb. Contractors must separate the dirt from the damaged foundations and cinder block walls as a result of the storm. The DPW will not remove any comingled dirt. NOV (notice of violation) or summons may be issued at the discretion of our Code Enforcer, Mr. Joe Costa.
Construction and Repairs
In addition, our Construction Office has been incredibly busy processing applications for permits.
Joe Costa has been very busy streamlining the zoning and construction forms so residents can efficiently complete the process reducing visits to Borough Hall.
All forms pertaining to Zoning applications, Land Use Board (JLUB) applications, Construction permits, rental and vacant property registrations have all been updated and are now available online on our Borough website in the “Forms” section. The updated forms are “fillable” PDF forms. They can be downloaded onto your computer or tablet, filled out then printed for submission to the Zoning or Construction office. Downloading and typing the details into the form using your computer or tablet ensures clear and efficient communication with the department which will lead to faster processing time while avoiding confusion.
All forms along with payment and backup paperwork can be dropped off at our convenient drop box located just outside the main entrance to Borough Hall at the parking lot. A security camera monitors the box constantly. We strongly encourage residents/applicants to use the drop box which will allow for after-hours drop off with no delay in getting your application in front of the appropriate reviewer. This is especially important for delivering time-sensitive material. Please be sure to include a contact phone number and, most importantly, an email address on ALL applications.
Code Enforcement
Lastly, it is the goal of the Code Enforcement Department to ensure compliance with all Borough Codes. By keeping properties (both residential and commercial) free of debris, maintaining lawns, shrubs and trees will help us all to maintain a cleaner and more esthetically pleasing Borough for all our residents, businesses and visitors to enjoy.
Thank you and please be safe.
Mayor John L. Madden
Mayor's Message: Blood Supply Shortage across the Garden State
Recently, it has come to my attention that the entire State of New Jersey is facing a critical need for blood donations as announced by NJBS (New Jersey Blood Services).
Recently, it has come to my attention that the entire State of New Jersey is facing a critical need for blood donations as announced by NJBS (New Jersey Blood Services). This blood emergency is due to the ongoing fears of Covid-19 which is raging throughout communities in New Jersey. Of particular concern is the Delta Variant which is affecting more and more younger people. In my opinion, I believe that younger people may feel a sense of general invulnerability in that there is very little concern about being personally affected by pandemics, and other catastrophic health situations, etc.
For example, recently, it was reported that over 200 students from a New Jersey High School were exposed to the coronavirus at a homecoming dance. Without the inability to contact trace the event, students were nevertheless asked to quarantine for 10 days. I have to believe that many of these situations across the Garden State have occurred and continue to occur.
Due to these events, fears continue to mount about the dangerous Delta Variant leading to cancelled blood drives thereby dramatically reducing these life-giving donations. As the NJBS anticipated a rebound in blood supply donations once people became vaccinated that they would answer the calls for said donations. However, the Delta Variant soon came along and quickly stopped the expected supply recovery. In addition, very few donor appointments are being made at donor centers for the same reason. The shortage in blood supply has dropped in recent weeks from 6-8 days down to just 1 day for type O blood. For emergency transfusions, blood group type 0 (negative) blood is typically called the universal donor type because it has the lowest risk of causing serious reactions for most people who receive it.
Andrew Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New Jersey Blood Services stated, “A robust blood supply is essential for the healthcare system to function and we must do everything we can to strengthen it at this time of uncertainty. We are so grateful to our donors for continuing to show up and encourage everyone in the region to join them to ensure there’s enough blood for the thousands who need transfusion each day in New Jersey.”
Extra safety precautions are in place by these healthcare professionals to help prevent person-to-person infections of Covid-19 and the Variants.
Donors can schedule appointments by calling 1-800-933-2566 or visiting www.nybc.org.
NYBC (New York Blood Center) is one of the largest independent, community-based blood centers in the world. This is a non- profit organization with operating divisions in many states including New Jersey.
Please be safe,
Mayor John L. Madden
