2026 Property Inspection Revaluation

The Borough of Middlesex is entering the third year of its five-year property reassessment program. The program is designed to ensure that property assessments reflect fair market value and that the tax burden is distributed fairly and equitably among property owners.

As part of this process, representatives of the Tax Assessor’s Office will be conducting field inspections throughout the Borough. Inspectors may measure buildings and structures and verify property information currently on record. This inspection is not an appraisal, and inspectors will not be assigning a value to your property during the visit. Inspections generally take no more than 15 minutes, and all inspectors will carry Borough identification.

If no one is home, a postcard will be left with information on how to schedule an appointment.

Tree Giveaway Project receives coveted ANJEC Award

Middlesex Borough – The Association of NJ Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) presented its coveted Environmental Achievement Award to the Middlesex Borough Environmental Commission for its Tree Giveaway Project. The project grows more than 300 native trees for residents to plant at no cost, expanding the community tree canopy while beautifying neighborhoods, supporting wildlife, improving stormwater management, and building a healthier, more resilient community.

Middlesex Borough was among four communities to receive this award at ANJEC’s 53rd Annual Environmental Congress on Friday, September 25, at a full-day conference at New Brunswick Theological Seminary where several hundred local and state environmentalists from throughout New Jersey gathered to celebrate their accomplishments, learn from environmental experts and interact with state and federal policymakers.

As keynote speaker, NJDEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak addressed New Jersey’s environmental priorities and policy goals. Workshop sessions throughout the day explored a variety of topics such as stormwater management, habitat corridors for NJ’s wildlife and tools for environmental advocacy.

“This year’s Environmental Congress was not only a celebration of local environmental action but also an urgent rallying cry for effective regulation to prevent loss of life and property due to climate-induced flooding and protection of our natural resources from AI data center development,” said ANJEC Executive Director Jennifer Coffey. “We’re very impressed with the passion and commitment of NJ’s Environmental Commissions and proud to be associated with their tireless efforts. The need for strong local action has never been more important.”

ANJEC also presented the Candace McKee Ashmun Environmental Legacy Award to former NJ State Climatologist David Robinson. This award is named for ANJEC's first executive director, who served a leadership role in NJ’s environmental community for over 50 years.

Victor Crowell Park Master Plan wins Achievement in Planning Award

Interim Administrator Geist accepted the Achievement in Planning Award on behalf of the Borough of Middlesex for the Victor Crowell Park Master Plan presented by the New Jersey Planning Officials.

The focus of the plan is to preserve and enhance the park, with environmental restoration and recreational improvements to create a more accessible and enjoyable park to the residents of the Borough. Key factors considered were flood mitigation measures, stream restoration, plantings, expanded trails, pedestrian access and the scenic overlooks.

Middlesex Borough's Jordan Simpson Wins Professional Boxing Debut

Mayor Mikolajczyk recently met with Middlesex resident Jordan Simpson to recognize his achievements. Jordan, who recently turned professional, won his first bout as a professional athlete. The Mayor extended congratulations on this accomplishment and offered his best wishes to Jordan as he begins his professional career. Residents are encouraged to join the Mayor in wishing Jordan continued success.

Proclamation: John L. Madden Honored as Pillar of Middlesex

Mayor Mikolajczyk, on behalf of the Governing Body, proudly recognized John L. Madden as a Pillar of the Community.

John L. Madden, a proud and longstanding resident of Middlesex Borough has consistently demonstrated praiseworthy service and has become an irreplaceable asset to the Borough. John L. Madden served as Mayor, during which he made countless contributions and positive improvements to benefit the Borough and its residents.

In addition to volunteering for many years on Council, John L. Madden has also volunteered his time as a member of several Commissions and Committees including the Joint Land Use Board, the Green Brook Flood Commission, the 10-Year Master Plan Committee, the Housing and Community Development Committee, and for 29 years the Board of Health.

Throughout the years John L. Madden has initiated many projects that have greatly benefited the Borough, including historical preservation for municipal landmarks, the cleanup of the contaminated Middlesex Sampling Plant, and the first Borough wide property tax revaluation since 1986, in addition he served as a committee member on LOSAP Committee where he was able to secure retirement benefits for the Borough volunteer firefighters.

The Borough of Middlesex extends our deepest gratitude to John L. Madden for all of his dedication, sacrifice and labor to our community.

Middlesex Borough Launches Campaign to Help Residents Cut Energy Costs

Free home energy assessments aim to boost comfort, efficiency, and savings for local households

Middlesex Borough N.J. September 9, 2026

Today, Middlesex Borough announced the launch of its residential energy efficiency outreach campaign to help residents manage their energy use and take advantage of PSE&G’s energy efficiency programs and incentives. This effort is part of Middlesex Borough’s commitment to improve energy efficiency and help residents find ways to save energy and lower their utility bills.

The goal of Middlesex Borough’s campaign is to help residents save money and improve the comfort, health, and safety of their home by participating in one of PSE&G’s energy efficiency programs. There are program options and incentives for eligible community members — including homeowners and renters of all income levels.

“We know that many residents want to reduce their energy use but aren’t sure where to start,” said Clare Levourne, Middlesex Borough Green Team Chairperson. “This campaign is intended to connect our community members to a free home energy assessment and clear guidance on available programs, making it simple to take the first step.”

Residents interested in learning more about PSE&G’s free home energy assessment—and to find out which energy efficiency programs they may qualify for—are encouraged to visit the Middlesex Borough Campaign website at https://www.EnergyOutreachNJ.com/MIDDLESEX.

Celebrate International Clean-up Day with the LRWP, Middlesex Borough DPW and Environmental Commission for a clean-up of the Green Brook at Mountain View Park in Middlesex Borough!

Mosquito Spraying Alert: Friday, September 4 2026 (Evening)

Weather conditions permitting, the Middlesex County Mosquito Extermination Commission will be conducting truck ULV spray missions for nuisance adult mosquitoes and/or vector control.

• Municipality: Dunellen, Middlesex, Piscataway

• Date and Time: Friday, September 4, 2026, 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM.

• Rain Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2026

• Mosquito Control Product: Zenivex ®E4, RTU, EPA# 2724-807 (LABEL) (FACT SHEET)

• Area: Neighborhoods off NJ-28, South Ave, and William St, east of Mountain Ave, and all of Dunellen (MAP)

The adult mosquito control treatment being conducted is in compliance with section 9.10 and 9.15 of the New Jersey Pesticide Control Code (N.J.A.C. Title 7, Chapter 30). All applications will be according to product labeling.

For additional information on mosquitoes and adulticiding, contact Dr. Deepak Matadha, Superintendent (NJDEP CPA License #50245B), Middlesex County Mosquito Extermination Commission at 200 Parsonage Rd Edison NJ 08837 at 732-549-0665.

For routine pesticide-related health inquiries, please contact the National Pesticide Information Center, at 1-800-858-7378. For information on pesticide regulations, pesticide complaints and health referrals, contact the New Jersey Pesticide Control Program at 1-609-984-6568. In the case of any pesticide emergency, please contact the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System at 1-800-222-1222. Upon request, the pesticide applicator or applicator business shall provide a resident with notification at least 12 hours prior to the application, except for Quarantine and Disease Vector Control only, when conditions necessitate pesticide applications sooner than that time.

The Commission's website, https://www.middlesexmosquito.org/mosquito-control/spray-schedule provides updated information on time and location of application(s).

Residents can take the following precautions to reduce exposure: (1) Pay attention to notices about mosquito insecticide treatments found through newspapers, websites, automated telephone messages or notices distributed by municipal, county or state agencies, (2) Plan your activities to limit time spent outside during times of possible insecticide treatments. Move your pets, their food, and water dishes inside during ULV applications. Also bring clothing and children’s toys inside. Stay back from application equipment, whether in use or not, (3) Whenever possible, remain indoors with windows closed and with window air conditioners on non-vent (closed to the outside air) and window fans turned off during spraying, (4) Avoid direct contact with surfaces that are still wet from pesticide spraying. Do not allow children to play in areas that have been sprayed until they have completely dried (approximately one hour), (5) If you must remain outdoors, avoid eye and skin contact with the spray. If you get spray in your eyes or on your skin, immediately flush and rinse with water, (6) Consult your doctor if you think you are experiencing health effects from the spraying. People who suffer from chemical sensitivities or feel spraying may aggravate a preexisting health condition may consult their physician or local health department.

Mayor's Report: Fall 2026

Fellow Residents:

It has been a busy summer in Middlesex. I am happy to say we continue to make progress in a number of areas and here are some highlights:

• The weather so far this year has not been kind to us, and recent summer storms have downed many trees and caused quite a bit of property damage. Thanks to our Police, Fire, OEM and DPW for quick action and follow up with utility companies and local agencies before, during and after the recent storms that enabled us to remove debris, open roads and restore power quickly.

• Despite ridiculously high increases in our health insurance premiums, we have managed to put together a conservative municipal budget in terms of a cost increase for the year. We were able to maintain all of our services but required deep cuts in personnel and expenditures to get there. Trenton has already warned us of another high increase for next year, so we are aggressively looking for alternatives.

• Housing prices increase at a much faster rate than commercial properties resulting in a larger out of pocket tax bill for the residents as residential properties haven to pick up a larger piece of the pie. To keep pace, we are being aggressive in trying to attract new businesses and redevelopment. We are getting close to having a project in the works for senior housing by Wood Avenue.

• We have had many questions regarding our ongoing reassessment program. We have conducted several meetings on the subject and have posted quite a bit of relevant information on the website to help your understanding of the process and a procedure should you feel your residence is improperly valued.

• On August 1st we had our annual meeting on the flood wall project. It continues to move along but we are still a long way off. We continue to push hard on our end for completion but with multiple agencies and departments involved it does seem to bog down from time to time. This project cannot get done soon enough for me.

• We have paved several local streets, and we have passed some major completion milestones in Mountain View Park. The new bathrooms and playground equipment look great.

• The second phase of the Hometown Heroes Banner project has been completed, with the installation of 30 banners along Route 28 and in Victor Crowell Park on the decorative light fixtures.

• We are on track to have the 3 Class III officers in the schools in September.

• I hope you attended National Night out on August 11th. This event gets better each year. Thanks to all the groups that participated. I tried to stop by and greet you all. Your participation makes this event the success it is.

• A fishing derby fundraiser for our Fire Department is planned for September 26th at Victor Crowell Park. Please plan on attending, they need our support.

• Victor the rock snake may reach a record length this year. Check him out at Victor Crowell.

• The summer concert series has been a large success. Thanks to our sponsors and the Legion, Recreation and the Culture & Arts Committee for their support in getting this underway. Next year will be even better.

Please come to the council meetings. It’s the best way to keep current on things.
