Tree Giveaway Project receives coveted ANJEC Award

The Association of NJ Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) presented its coveted Environmental Achievement Award to the Middlesex Borough Environmental Commission for its Tree Giveaway Project.

Middlesex Borough – The Association of NJ Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) presented its coveted Environmental Achievement Award to the Middlesex Borough Environmental Commission for its Tree Giveaway Project. The project grows more than 300 native trees for residents to plant at no cost, expanding the community tree canopy while beautifying neighborhoods, supporting wildlife, improving stormwater management, and building a healthier, more resilient community.

Middlesex Borough was among four communities to receive this award at ANJEC’s 53rd Annual Environmental Congress on Friday, September 25, at a full-day conference at New Brunswick Theological Seminary where several hundred local and state environmentalists from throughout New Jersey gathered to celebrate their accomplishments, learn from environmental experts and interact with state and federal policymakers.

As keynote speaker, NJDEP Commissioner Ed Potosnak addressed New Jersey’s environmental priorities and policy goals. Workshop sessions throughout the day explored a variety of topics such as stormwater management, habitat corridors for NJ’s wildlife and tools for environmental advocacy.

“This year’s Environmental Congress was not only a celebration of local environmental action but also an urgent rallying cry for effective regulation to prevent loss of life and property due to climate-induced flooding and protection of our natural resources from AI data center development,” said ANJEC Executive Director Jennifer Coffey. “We’re very impressed with the passion and commitment of NJ’s Environmental Commissions and proud to be associated with their tireless efforts. The need for strong local action has never been more important.”

ANJEC also presented the Candace McKee Ashmun Environmental Legacy Award to former NJ State Climatologist David Robinson. This award is named for ANJEC's first executive director, who served a leadership role in NJ’s environmental community for over 50 years.

About ANJEC

ANJEC is a 57-year-old nonprofit based in Mendham whose mission is to promote local action to protect and restore New Jersey’s natural resources and to ensure healthy communities for today and the future. ANJEC advances its mission by engaging in equitable and inclusive practices through leadership, partnerships, education, advocacy for strong public policy and in support of environmental commissions, public officials, and communities throughout New Jersey. Middlesex Borough N.J. September 9, 2026

Today, Middlesex Borough announced the launch of its residential energy efficiency outreach campaign to help residents manage their energy use and take advantage of PSE&G’s energy efficiency programs and incentives. This effort is part of Middlesex Borough’s commitment to improve energy efficiency and help residents find ways to save energy and lower their utility bills.

The goal of Middlesex Borough’s campaign is to help residents save money and improve the comfort, health, and safety of their home by participating in one of PSE&G’s energy efficiency programs. There are program options and incentives for eligible community members — including homeowners and renters of all income levels.

“We know that many residents want to reduce their energy use but aren’t sure where to start,” said Clare Levourne, Middlesex Borough Green Team Chairperson. “This campaign is intended to connect our community members to a free home energy assessment and clear guidance on available programs, making it simple to take the first step.”

Residents interested in learning more about PSE&G’s free home energy assessment—and to find out which energy efficiency programs they may qualify for—are encouraged to visit the Middlesex Borough Campaign website at https://www.EnergyOutreachNJ.com/MIDDLESEX.

We will also be holding an in-person Energy Workshop on September 26 from 11AM to 2 PM at the Middlesex Library in the Community Room.  Please join us!

Update: Upcoming Middlesex Sampling Plant Vicinity Property Investigations

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District is conducting environmental investigations and survey activities related to the former Middlesex Sampling Plant (MSP) site.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District is conducting environmental investigations and survey activities related to the former Middlesex Sampling Plant (MSP) site located at 239 Mountain Avenue in the Borough of Middlesex, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The MSP was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Engineer District (MED) to sample, store, test, and transfer ores containing uranium, thorium, and beryllium. The ongoing site work is being performed under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP), a program that is cleaning up sites with contamination resulting from the nation’s early atomic energy program.

project background

The 9.6-acre MSP is a legacy MED and U.S. Atomic Energy Commission facility that received uranium, thorium, and beryllium ores from the 1940s until 1967, when the facility was decontaminated to the standards in effect at the time. However, overlooked during decontamination were traces of radioactive materials that had been carried off-site over the years by wind or rain, or removed from the site for use as fill at nearby properties. Also, records later revealed that in 1948, some radioactively contaminated materials had been trucked from the plant to the Middlesex Municipal Landfill (MML), one-half mile away.

In the 1980s, the contaminated nearby properties (referred to as MSP Vicinity Properties) were cleaned up, and the excavated soil was stored on the MSP site in a specially constructed pile, known as the Vicinity Property Pile.

A Record of Decision (ROD) was signed in 2005 that specifies the criteria for the cleanup of contaminated soil related to the MSP. Cleanup of the MSP soils was completed in 2008. USACE conducted a review of the MSP Vicinity Properties previously identified by the U.S. Department of Energy to ensure they meet the criteria set in the ROD. In 2019, USACE added a new Vicinity Property to the MSP. The location of this VP suggested that a wider area around the MSP be further investigated. In 2021, USACE conducted an expanded aerial survey extending 12 square miles around the MSP Site.

current activities

The aerial survey results show that there is no immediate threat to people’s health or the environment. However, USACE will continue ground investigations this year on public and private properties. Work crews will conduct visual observations, perform surface scans, and collect soil samples. The additional data collected will help to confirm the aerial survey results. It is important to note that USACE investigating a property does NOT mean there is contamination. Similarly, elevated readings do not necessarily indicate contamination because there are many sources of naturally occurring radiologic activity in our environment that can cause elevated readings, such as granite stone and building materials like brick. Work conducted by USACE will help determine whether radiological levels on the properties investigated are consistent with naturally occurring radioactive material. As with the previous USACE work at this site, these investigations are being conducted in coordination with both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).

Middlesex Awarded a Sustainability Grant

Middlesex Borough was selected to receive a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded the PSEG Foundation.

Middlesex, NJ – Middlesex Borough was selected to receive a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. This round of funding awarded six $20,000 grants, thirteen $10,000 grants, and thirty-one $2,000 grants to communities across 18 counties. The awarded projects reflect a diverse set of local sustainability efforts, including community gardens and outdoor classrooms, native plant and pollinator habitat restoration, environmental education and STEAM programming, green team support and municipal engagement, recycling and waste reduction initiatives, water conservation and rain garden installations, tree planting, and projects that promote public health, mental wellness, and hands-on sustainability learning in both school and municipal settings.

“Middlesex Boro is excited to receive this grant, which will support the growth of our newly formed Green Team and enhance community engagement through educational programs, outreach events, and workshops. These initiatives will promote environmental awareness, encourage resident participation, and create momentum for future sustainability projects, thereby strengthening the Green Team's role in the community.” said Clare Levourne, Middlesex Green Team Chairperson

“Congratulations to the schools and towns receiving grants. Thank you for building positive momentum on the ground, in your communities,” said Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey. “These grants continue to lead to meaningful projects that help make New Jersey more livable, environmentally friendly, and prosperous.”

Over the past 14 years, the PSEG Foundation has contributed more than $5.1 million to the Sustainable Jersey programs, strengthening its legacy of community investment and environmental leadership. Of that support, $3.7 million was distributed in grants directly to New Jersey municipalities and public schools.

“Our partnership with Sustainable Jersey is incredibly important to us. By combining our efforts and shared commitment to supporting young people, we’re able to fund programs that promote environmental education and inspire the next generation,” said Calvin Ledford, president of the PSEG Foundation and director of PSEG Corporate Social Responsibility. “A sustainable New Jersey starts with our youth — cultivating creativity, fostering responsibility and community. These are actions PSEG has championed for over 120 years. Congratulations to this year’s grant recipients for moving us all toward a cleaner future.”

Grant proposals were reviewed and selected by an independent Blue-Ribbon Selection Committee. These grants not only support innovative, community-driven projects but also help recipients advance toward Sustainable Jersey or Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.

self-care pantry initiative: Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group

The Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group is taking a significant step toward addressing a vital community need with their latest project: a Self-Care Pantry. Co-leaders of the group have announced plans to install a new pantry dedicated to collecting and distributing essential self-care items for those in need.

This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to a growing concern in the community. The pantry will be located near the existing mini food pantry, near the Middlesex Borough Library, creating a convenient hub for residents to access both food and self-care essentials. Items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, and lotion will be available for individuals and families who are struggling. These are small items but can make a significant difference in someone’s sense of wellbeing.

The project is set to launch in the spring of 2025, with the assistance of the Department of Public Works (DPW) for the installation. The Girl Scouts are calling on the community to support this effort by donating self-care items to stock the pantry. This initiative not only addresses an immediate need but also fosters a spirit of giving and community support.

By creating this self-care pantry, the Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group is demonstrating the power of young leaders to make a lasting impact. Their dedication to identifying a problem and implementing a sustainable solution is an inspiring example of community service in action.

For those interested in contributing to this meaningful project, donations of self-care items can be dropped off at the Volunteer Fair on May 3, 2025 at Middlesex Borough Library.  Once the pantry is open, community members are invited to give what they can and take what they need. Together, we can ensure that everyone in our community has access to self-care essentials.

Meet Your Local Heroes:  The Volunteers of the Middlesex Fire Department

The Middlesex Fire Department responded to 468 calls for service in 2024. Did you know Middlesex Borough has no paid firefighters? Every one of our 59 members are “Volunteers” . Our members donate their time to serve their community. Just a few benefits of joining the Middlesex Fire Department are no cost to you for State & Federal training, department issued gear, & uniforms. We also offer LOSAP (Length of Service Awards Program) which is a retirement account for eligible volunteers. If you meet our department requirements you will receive a stipend in your account annually that can be withdrawn upon retirement. The FD budget committee is also in negotiations with the borough for a response per emergency call stipend for all eligible volunteers that would also be awarded annually.

Volunteering as a firefighter is not just about putting out fires; it's about being there for people in their most vulnerable moments. It's about providing support, comfort, and a sense of security during times of crisis.

The chance to help others, to be part of a dedicated team, and to face challenges head-on is a very rewarding experience. Many of our current and past members have also pursued one of the emergency services as a career because of their experience as a Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, by becoming a 911 Dispatcher, Police Officer, Paid Career Firefighter, EMT, or Paramedic.

Come join our members at the Volunteer Fair on May 3, 2025, between 10am and 3 pm at the Middlesex Borough Library to learn how you can get involved.
