Introducing a Few of Our Dedicated Borough Volunteers

We are proud to highlight some of your friends and neighbors who tell us in their own words why they volunteer in Middlesex. Our community’s local volunteers are so important! Each of them inspires us to take action and promotes respect for their fellow residents.

Are you ready to get started?

Send us a message today and begin a friendly discussion with our Middlesex Borough volunteers to find out where you can be a great fit.

Especially in this day and age, we know people are busy, families are torn in many directions, and local businesses are focused on their survival. At the same time, much in our Borough traditionally depends on dedicated volunteers to operate – for things including Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, Recreation, Rescue Squad, Committees, and so many other vital functions of our hometown. (And don’t forget, these Borough all-volunteer departments help keep our taxes down, too!)

Our Borough is Facing a Critical Shortage of Volunteers

As grateful as we our for our current volunteers, We need YOU, too!

Our outreach this year aims to break through a common misunderstanding – where people (all of us!) tend to assume that ‘someone else will probably do it.’ Our Middlesex Volunteers! campaign organizers want to encourage individuals like YOU to think about what talent you might be able to contribute as a proud resident of the Borough.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page, this website, sign up for Borough email-newsletters, and watch for an announcement soon about our upcoming Volunteer Fair event in April.

Free Program for Middlesex Borough Residents

Feedback from Previous emergency preparedness classes has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I attended their class in December and highly recommend everyone take this CPR class. The recent injury and recovery of Damar Hamlin is a great example of what can happen if someone is aware of how to use CPR to assist someone who has suffered cardiac arrest. 13 year olds are permitted and I encourage them to attend as well. I am recommending this training to everyone I know!”
— M. Hompesch
“The CPR training class was very informative. I have never taken a hands on CPR class, even though I graduated with a Health Science Degree. Everything was well explained, and presentation was good.”
— L. Ryan
“Thank you for offering this very much needed course. The presentation and the presenters were wonderful and we loved that there was hands on at the end of the course.”
— R. Coco
“This program is another great example of the value that our OEM continues to bring to our residents. I was particularly impressed with the MedicZero team who provides the training. Lastly, a big thank you to our OEM and our Library for collaborating on hosting this program.”

OEM: Ways to Prepare for Extreme Heat

Extreme heat is a silent killer. Learn more about Heat Stroke, Heat Exhaustion, and ways to seek assistance and cool down…

People suffer heat-related illness when the body’s temperature control system is overloaded. The body normally cools itself by sweating. But under some conditions, sweating just isn’t enough. When the humidity is high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing heat quickly.

At greatest risk for heat-related illness include those who are at old age, youth (age 0-4), obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, and prescription drug use and alcohol use.

Learn more about Heat Stroke, Heat Exhaustion, and ways to seek assistance and cool down at https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/faq.html.

OEM Sponsors "Bystander CPR Training" for DPW Staff

OEM sponsored the bystander hands-only CPR training for all of the Borough’s Department of Public Works (DPW) staff, as well as any other interested Borough staff…

The Middlesex Borough Office of Emergency Management Sponsors “Bystander CPR Training” for Entire Borough Dept. of Public Works Staff

On September 29, 2022, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was pleased to host MedicZero, a nonprofit organization of current medical school students from top rated institutions across the tri state area, with a passion for empowering the community with bystander-appropriate Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques. OEM sponsored the bystander hands-only CPR training for all of the Borough’s Department of Public Works (DPW) staff, as well as any other interested Borough staff. OEM members were also present and on hand to assist.

The training was a huge success, maxing out at 35 attendees of various ages and previous CPR abilities. After an informative and enlightening presentation from Pranya Gaddipati, the Chief Operating Officer of MedicZero, attendees were able to recognize and act in an appropriate and time sensitive manner on the characteristics of strokes and different cardiac episodes and situations.

Attendees were taught how to quickly assess a situation, recognize and identify stroke symptoms and cardiac episode symptoms, apply chest compressions effectively, use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and maximize every crucial minute in a life threatening event.

“A lot of us have done CPR training before and years ago,” explained DPW Superintendent Leonard Vidal. “But after this one, I feel, we all are walking away learning a lot of new information to make the best decisions and actions for these situations in the future.”

It is the goal of OEM Administrator, Barbara Benson, along with Director Jack Costa, and Deputy Lee Poandl, with sponsor and support from the Middlesex Public Library and Library Director, Chrissy George, to bring this program to the entire Middlesex Borough community at NO COST to attendees. This program is tailored to serve and teach anyone aged 10 years old and up.

“Emergency preparedness doesn’t just mean having a go bag,” states OEM Administrator Barbara Benson. “You have to be prepared on every level. If you’re in the presence of a cardiac or stroke situation YOU are the help before the help arrives. Every minute during a stroke or cardiac situation is crucial, and it could be awhile before that ambulance arrives.”

“The Library is in the business of bringing information to the public, and there is no more valuable information than how to save a life,” says Library Director Chrissy George. “We are thrilled to work with OEM to assist in the goal of empowering every Middlesex resident to have the skills to save their neighbors.”

MedicZero’s mission “seeks to enable bystanders with the confidence to recognize emergencies and initiate care, encourage the delivery of skillful, evidence-based care by providers, and construct community paramedicine initiatives to improve the prehospital landscape.” With chapters across the tri state area in different universities, these EMTs, doctor and nursing students, under direction of licensed doctors endorsed from Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), MedicZero strives to bring community emergency medical interventions suitable for the layperson and bystander to do as much possible in the “prehospital stages” of cardiac episodes. For more information on MedicZero, visit them on the web, at www.mediczero.org.

As the OEM decree states, “Disaster can strike at any time. We all have a personal responsibility to be ready. Help us preserve our future.” This is an invaluable opportunity to empower the entire community, and OEM is ready to make ALL of Middlesex a community that’s informed and fully prepared to save a life. For more information on upcoming classes, be sure to keep an eye on the OEM social media, at: www.facebook.com/MiddlesexBoroOEM.

How to Appeal a FEMA Disaster Assistance Decision

New Jersey survivors affected by flooding caused by remnants of Hurricane Ida who have registered for disaster assistance may receive a letter from FEMA stating they are ineligible. However, this does not have to be the final word.

If an applicant believes FEMA’s decision was incorrect, they can file an appeal with FEMA. Applicants must appeal initial eligibility determinations within 60 days of the date on their eligibility notification letter. The first step is for applicants to read their determination letter carefully to understand why FEMA decided the application was “ineligible.” Many times, it could be something as simple as providing missing documents or information.

2) Survey: Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA)

Borough OEM Collecting Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA) for FEMA

Middlesex Borough is being asked by NJ Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to collect information which helps them get a picture of what damage has occurred to individual dwellings. We have created an easy, 12-question survey that will help to do that. Please read the below and then click on the form if you have sustained any kind of damage from the storm.

NOTES:

  1. This does NOT take the place of residents working with their private homeowners/renters insurance companies. Likewise, this survey and your responses have nothing to do with insurance nor the dollar value to the damage assigned.

  2. Responses will be kept confidential and will only be sent on to NJOEM

  3. This is not mandatory for residents but encouraged.

These survey results are a tool used by FEMA to gather information about the extent of the damage and will help the county and state get the right dollar amounts allocated to different programs. The data collected would support potential federal declaration requests to FEMA for programs like the Individuals and Households Program (IHP) which provides financial and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by a disaster.

If you should have any questions about this survey, please contact the Borough Office of Emergency Management at jcosta@middlesexboro-nj.gov. If you would rather fill this form out on paper, you can either print it and drop it off at Borough Hall (1200 Mountain Ave.) or you can come to Borough Hall and fill it in.

5) PSE&G STEPS TOWARD gas service RESTORATION

Attention residents: PSE&G has proactively turned off gas service to parts of our area out of safety concerns due to the scope of flood damage. Some customers who did not experience flooding will also have their gas service turned off. We have done this out of an abundance of caution and to ensure a safe restoration process.

On Sept. 3, PSE&G began proactively  turning off gas service to customers with extensive flooding out of safety concerns due to the widespread  damage caused by extensive flooding of nearby rivers. Restoring gas service after flooding is a time-consuming, multiday process. Some customers may not have gas service for an extended period of time.

Some customers who did not experience flooding will also have their gas service turned off, out of an abundance of caution and to ensure a safe restoration process. PSE&G is prioritizing the restoration of customers who did not experience flooding. PSE&G will prioritize your restoration. Please call PSE&G at 1-800-350-7734 to schedule an appointment for gas service to be restored.

According to PSE&G, critical steps to restoring your natural gas service if you experienced significant flood damage:

  1. ☑ Your town’s municipal inspector will visit your location and perform an inspection.

    a. Township inspectors will make rounds in some towns. If you have questions about the inspection process, please call your township’s municipal office or office of emergency management.

    b. If your home or business passes inspection, the inspector should notify you and PSE&G that your service is ready to be inspected, repaired or replaced. It is not necessary to call PSE&G for scheduling in this situation.

    c. If your property fails inspection, you must have a qualified contractor make repairs and then be re-inspected by the municipal inspector.

  2. ☑ If your electric panel was affected by flooding - it must be inspected, repaired, re-inspected and turned on before gas service can be restored.

Both of these steps must take place before PSE&G crews can turn on your natural gas service. PSE&G will not restore natural gas-fed appliances that have been exposed to flood water. Please keep in mind PSE&G will need clear access to your natural gas meter and gas appliances for close inspection, repair or replacement. If we cannot access the natural gas meter, we will not be able to restore your natural gas service.

  • If a gas appliance fails inspection, we will apply a violation tag and disconnect the appliance from the gas piping. Customers are responsible for having equipment repaired or replaced and

re-inspected. When your inspection is complete, or repairs have been made, call PSE&G at 1-800-350-7734 to schedule an appointment for appliance connection.
