Office of Emergency Management: Latest News
Emergencies—whether natural disasters, severe weather, acts of terrorism, or other man‑made incidents—often occur suddenly and without warning.
Preparedness Starts With You: Taking Personal Responsibility to Protect Life and Property
Emergencies—whether natural disasters, severe weather, acts of terrorism, or other man‑made incidents—often occur suddenly and without warning. While All Volunteer Middlesex Borough Office of Emergency Management works continuously to enhance community safety, the strongest defense begins with individual preparedness. Every resident plays a crucial role in ensuring that our community remains resilient during challenging times.
Why Personal Preparedness Matters
Disasters move quickly. Decisions made in the first minutes of an emergency can determine your ability to remain safe. Personal responsibility is not just recommended, it is essential. By preparing ahead, you empower yourself and your family to respond with confidence and reduce risk to life and property.
Stay Informed: Alerts Save Lives
One of the most important steps you can take is staying connected with official emergency alerts. Middlesex Borough uses two major notification systems:
NIXLE Alerts: Provide community updates, emergency instructions, road closures, and critical messages directly to your phone or email.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA): Sent to mobile devices during high‑level emergencies such as severe weather warnings, imminent threats, or evacuation orders.
These alerts are issued to help you take immediate protective action. Please pay close attention to them—your safety may depend on it.
Know Your Evacuation Route
In an emergency, roads may become congested or inaccessible. Identifying yourself as to an evacuation route before an incident helps you leave the area quickly and safely. Identify alternate routes in case the primary one is blocked.
Locate Your Emergency Transition Centers
Transition Centers provide safe, temporary accommodation during large‑scale emergencies. Know the nearest center and how you will get there, especially if transportation becomes limited. Transition Centers may differ based on the type of event, so staying informed through NIXLE is critical. REGISTER today to receive Nixle Alerts text messages” MIDDLESEXPD” to 888777 to begin receiving SMS/text only or to receive email alerts https://local.nixle.com/register/
Plan for Your Pets
Pets are part of your family, and they require planning as well.
Make sure you know:
Which if any transition centers accept pets
What supplies your pet will need
Whether your pet is comfortable being transported quickly
Preparing now ensures you don’t have to make difficult decisions during an emergency.
Build Your Go Bag
A Go Bag should contain essential items you can grab at a moment’s notice. It should be kept in an accessible place and reviewed regularly. Consider including:
Copies of important documents
Medications and medical supplies
Water and non‑perishable food
Flashlight and batteries
Basic hygiene items
Extra clothing
Small first‑aid kit
Items for infants, older adults, or people with disabilities
Pet food and pet care supplies
A well‑prepared Go Bag ensures you can leave quickly, without scrambling to find what you need.
Prepare Today—Not Tomorrow
Preparedness is an ongoing responsibility. When every resident takes these steps, our entire community becomes stronger and more resilient. Emergencies test our readiness, but they also bring out our ability to act, protect, and support one another.
OEM remains committed to guiding and assisting all Middlesex residents. Together—with proactive planning and personal responsibility—we can continue building a safer community for all.

$1.1M Middlesex Water Upgrade To Replace 1960s Pipes
New Jersey American Water is beginning a $1.1 million infrastructure upgrade in Middlesex aimed at improving water service reliability and boosting fire protection.
MIDDLESEX BOROUGH – New Jersey American Water is beginning a $1.1 million infrastructure upgrade in Middlesex aimed at improving water service reliability and boosting fire protection.
The project will replace about 2,500 feet of aging water main originally installed in the 1960s along George Avenue, from Lincoln Boulevard to Ashland Road. Crews will install new 8-inch ductile iron pipe, add two fire hydrants and renew 34 customer service lines connected to the main.
As work progresses, crews will also inspect service lines for every property along the route by digging small holes near curbs to identify pipe materials. If lead or galvanized steel is found, the utility said it will work with property owners to replace those lines as part of a statewide effort to eliminate them by 2031.
“As we upgrade the water main, we’re also checking service lines at each property to understand what materials are in the ground,” stated Mike A. Rinaldo, a construction inspector with New Jersey American Water. “This helps us identify and replace lead and galvanized service lines while strengthening the system long term.”
Work was expected to begin on or about June 17 and continue through mid-October, weather permitting. Crews will typically work weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekend work is not expected unless needed to stay on schedule.
The project will be completed by contractor CRJ, with traffic control coordinated with local officials. Access to homes and driveways will be maintained, and construction areas will receive daily cleanup. Temporary restoration will follow excavation, with permanent restoration planned after soil settles, usually about 90 days after completion.
Residents can receive updates by logging into their MyWater account or signing up for alerts at AWCodeRed.com or by texting WATER to 24639. New Jersey American Water serves about 3 million people statewide and is the state’s largest regulated water utility.
