While All Volunteer Middlesex Borough Office of Emergency Management works continuously to enhance community safety, the strongest defense begins with individual preparedness. Every resident plays a crucial role in ensuring that our community remains resilient during challenging times.
Why Personal Preparedness Matters
Disasters move quickly. Decisions made in the first minutes of an emergency can determine your ability to remain safe. Personal responsibility is not just recommended, it is essential. By preparing ahead, you empower yourself and your family to respond with confidence and reduce risk to life and property.
Stay Informed: Alerts Save Lives
One of the most important steps you can take is staying connected with official emergency alerts. Middlesex Borough uses two major notification systems:
NIXLE Alerts: Provide community updates, emergency instructions, road closures, and critical messages directly to your phone or email.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA): Sent to mobile devices during high‑level emergencies such as severe weather warnings, imminent threats, or evacuation orders.
These alerts are issued to help you take immediate protective action. Please pay close attention to them—your safety may depend on it.
Know Your Evacuation Route
In an emergency, roads may become congested or inaccessible. Identifying yourself as to an evacuation route before an incident helps you leave the area quickly and safely. Identify alternate routes in case the primary one is blocked.
Locate Your Emergency Transition Centers
Transition Centers provide safe, temporary accommodation during large‑scale emergencies. Know the nearest center and how you will get there, especially if transportation becomes limited. Transition Centers may differ based on the type of event, so staying informed through NIXLE is critical. Plan for Your Pets
Pets are part of your family, and they require planning as well.
Make sure you know:
Which if any transition centers accept pets
What supplies your pet will need
Whether your pet is comfortable being transported quickly

Build Your Go Bag
A Go Bag should contain essential items you can grab at a moment’s notice. It should be kept in an accessible place and reviewed regularly. Consider including:
Copies of important documents
Medications and medical supplies
Water and non‑perishable food
Flashlight and batteries
Basic hygiene items
Extra clothing
Small first‑aid kit
Items for infants, older adults, or people with disabilities
Pet food and pet care supplies
