Mayor's Report: Spring 2026
2026 will have its fair share of challenges. Challenges bring an opportunity to do things better.
Fellow Middlesex residents,
2026 will have its fair share of challenges. Challenges bring an opportunity to do things better.
My number one concern for 2026 is the Municipal budget. Although we strive to budget conservatively, the state government has given us quite the curve ball with a 53% increase in health benefits. Although not mentioned during the previous gubernatorial election this surprise alone is a $1.1 million dollar increase or 5.5%. Adding in utility increases, other New Jersey insurance increases as well as wage increases it is very easy to see that 2026 is going to be a year of hard choices.
We always strive to be fiscally conservative in these unsure times however it is unsettling to me how despite our continued efforts the state government pushes their reluctance to address critical issues (healthcare and utilities) down to the cities, towns, and boroughs, and makes them our problem to deal with. We will prepare a budget that meets our needs, protects our services, and maximizes our resources as much as possible while trying to be as affordable as possible.
Other noteworthy items:
The Agreement for the Class III officers in the schools as of today is signed off on by the Borough and the Board of Education and the anticipated receipt of the down payment has the Borough now starting the search for the 3 approved officers. This is not as simple as it sounds and I would expect that finding and training officers at this late stage in the school year may be difficult for this year but we will do our best.
We continue to be aggressive in looking for opportunities for grants. We have several million dollars of applications in and at this point we are anticipating approximately $900,000 of awards to help with our infrastructure needs.
Our zoning and code enforcement efforts are showing results in property maintenance and building code compliance.
We are nearing completion of the bathroom replacement and upgrades to the Mountainview Park Grove area. It looks great and I would expect the final touches to be put on when the weather finally breaks.
Volunteerism continues to be a challenge and a need. In Middlesex Borough, we all want a bright future, but it needs your help to get there. Please consider helping out.
The Middlesex High School Boys Bowling Team won the Group 1 State Championship. That’s an incredible accomplishment and something the entire community should be proud of.
The winter weather is a challenge this year. Spring is 3 weeks away as I’m writing this article, but it is hard to feel the glow of a warm spring while I’m looking at piles of snow. Thanks to the DPW, Police and Fire Department, the first responders, and volunteers who pitched in to clear streets, sidewalks and paths to keep things safe and moving.
As spring approaches, I am thankful for the blessings we have large and small. Stephen Covey said “We do make a difference – one way or the other. We are responsible for the impact of our lives. Whatever we do with whatever we have, we leave behind us a legacy for those who follow.”
That’s all for now. We have a lot to do, and time is at a premium. We continue to do what is in the best interest for Middlesex.
Please come to the council meetings. It’s the best way to keep current on things.
Enjoy the spring.

With free training provided by MedicZero, attendees will learn pediatric and adult techniques for CPR, Stroke, Choking, & more.
When: March 26, 6pm
Where: Middlesex Library Community Room
The Middlesex Borough Office of Emergency Management, collaborating with the Middlesex Borough Library, are once again hosting a Medic-Zero Training. This incredible initiative started with Rutgers-New Brunswick alumni medical students. The program is all about empowering ordinary people to do extraordinary things, saving lives through simple effective interventions like hands-only CPR and more. Follow the site for additional updates leading up to March 26, 2026 Medic-Zero training.
The mission of Medic-Zero , an all-volunteer - non-profit organization of college medical students across the country is clear:
Train bystanders to act before first responders arrive, because those few minutes can mean everything. By giving our community, the tools and confidence to step in, we are building a stronger, resilient and safer Middlesex.
We began this journey back in 2022 under the Office of Emergency Management “You Are the Help Until Help Arrives” initiative training with our Middlesex Borough Department of Public Works staff in the Bystander-CPR and Bleeding Control followed by a number of FREE community trainings in areas covering stroke symptoms, basic AED, Hands only CPR for Pediatric and adults, Pediatric/Adult Choking Relief. We are now introducing Use of Epi-Pen and use of Narcan in the March 26, 2026 training. We introduced our “You Are The Help Until Help Arrives” through Medic-Zero to our own Middlesex High School at the Varsity Football games in 2024.
Now it’s time to take it to the next level. Classes such as these not only teach skills- but they also inspire courage and confidence to recognize emergencies and initiate care in the delivery of skilled, evidence-based care by bystander providers.
Your role is critical. Let’s spread the word, encourage participation, and show our community that we are leading the way in life-saving education to create a culture of preparedness and readiness. Every person that is trained could be the difference between life and loss.
The choice is up to you! Sign yourself and eligible family members up for this FREE. Then spread the word on your social media about this vital training. Space is limited and open to Middlesex Borough Residents from Age 13 and up. Registration is required. Carefully read the eligibility and REGISTRATION requirements in FLYER attached so you don’t miss out.
Together we are not only hosting a program, but we are also creating a movement to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other man-made disasters to preserve life and property. Its your choice, together we can make this happen!

Solar Simplified Expands Community Solar Access across New Jersey with Middlesex Partnership
Solar Simplified is expanding access to Community Solar across New Jersey’s PSE&G utility territory, launching a new municipal partnership with the Borough of Middlesex…
MIDDLESEX, NJ, UNITED STATES, January 7, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Solar Simplified is expanding access to Community Solar across New Jersey’s PSE&G utility territory, launching a new municipal partnership with the Borough of Middlesex as part of its growing statewide initiative to deliver meaningful electricity bill savings and equitable access to clean energy.
The Middlesex collaboration builds on Solar Simplified’s first New Jersey municipal partnership with Edgewater Park Township, where the Community Solar program has already driven hundreds of resident enrollments. Together, these partnerships reflect increasing demand for accessible, locally generated renewable energy and demonstrate how municipalities can help residents reduce energy costs without installing solar panels.
“Community solar is a win for our residents and our environment,” said Clare Levourne, Chair of the Environmental Commission for the Borough of Middlesex. “Through our partnership with Solar Simplified, we’re helping households reduce energy costs while investing in a cleaner, more resilient energy future for our community.”
Through the program, Middlesex residents and other eligible PSE&G customers can enroll now to receive 45 percent savings on applied solar credits. Subscribers receive credits directly on their utility bills while continuing to receive electricity service from their existing utility provider, with no upfront costs, no installation, and no long-term commitment.
“Community solar is one of the most immediate and inclusive tools we have to address rising energy costs while expanding access to clean energy,” said Aviv Shalgi, CEO of Solar Simplified. “Our partnerships with communities like Middlesex and Edgewater Park show what is possible when municipalities and experienced operators work together to deliver real savings at scale. This is the foundation of our long-term commitment to New Jersey.”
Projects serving participating New Jersey communities are expected to begin generating electricity in the first quarter of 2026. By enrolling ahead of project activation, participants are positioned to capture maximum benefits during the summer months, when energy production is typically highest.
Advancing Energy Equity in New Jersey:
As a registered subscriber organization with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, Solar Simplified is committed to promoting equitable access to clean energy across the state. At least 51 percent of all available Community Solar capacity will be reserved for low- and moderate-income households, ensuring that families who need savings the most are prioritized.
The Solar Simplified model allows residents to benefit from renewable energy without installing panels or switching electric providers. The company also works closely with local organizations, including senior centers, housing authorities, and community groups, to reach income-qualified households.
Building Long-Term Municipal Partnerships:
Edgewater Park was the first municipality in New Jersey to join Solar Simplified’s initiative, setting an example for other towns across the state. In both Edgewater Park and Middlesex, Solar Simplified is partnering with local leaders to support community engagement through direct outreach, educational resources, and local events designed to make enrollment simple and accessible.
The Middlesex partnership represents the continued expansion of Solar Simplified’s New Jersey footprint across both PSE&G and JCP&L territories. With ample capacity available today and additional projects planned for 2026, the company is building a scalable model for long-term municipal collaboration across the state.
Edgewater Park and Middlesex now join more than 100 municipalities and community organizations nationwide that partner with Solar Simplified, including senior centers, housing authorities, weatherization nonprofits, and other local groups working to expand access to affordable clean energy and household savings.
