Middlesex Awarded a Sustainability Grant

Middlesex Borough was selected to receive a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded the PSEG Foundation.

Middlesex, NJ – Middlesex Borough was selected to receive a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. This round of funding awarded six $20,000 grants, thirteen $10,000 grants, and thirty-one $2,000 grants to communities across 18 counties. The awarded projects reflect a diverse set of local sustainability efforts, including community gardens and outdoor classrooms, native plant and pollinator habitat restoration, environmental education and STEAM programming, green team support and municipal engagement, recycling and waste reduction initiatives, water conservation and rain garden installations, tree planting, and projects that promote public health, mental wellness, and hands-on sustainability learning in both school and municipal settings.

“Middlesex Boro is excited to receive this grant, which will support the growth of our newly formed Green Team and enhance community engagement through educational programs, outreach events, and workshops. These initiatives will promote environmental awareness, encourage resident participation, and create momentum for future sustainability projects, thereby strengthening the Green Team's role in the community.” said Clare Levourne, Middlesex Green Team Chairperson

“Congratulations to the schools and towns receiving grants. Thank you for building positive momentum on the ground, in your communities,” said Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey. “These grants continue to lead to meaningful projects that help make New Jersey more livable, environmentally friendly, and prosperous.”

Over the past 14 years, the PSEG Foundation has contributed more than $5.1 million to the Sustainable Jersey programs, strengthening its legacy of community investment and environmental leadership. Of that support, $3.7 million was distributed in grants directly to New Jersey municipalities and public schools.

“Our partnership with Sustainable Jersey is incredibly important to us. By combining our efforts and shared commitment to supporting young people, we’re able to fund programs that promote environmental education and inspire the next generation,” said Calvin Ledford, president of the PSEG Foundation and director of PSEG Corporate Social Responsibility. “A sustainable New Jersey starts with our youth — cultivating creativity, fostering responsibility and community. These are actions PSEG has championed for over 120 years. Congratulations to this year’s grant recipients for moving us all toward a cleaner future.”

Grant proposals were reviewed and selected by an independent Blue-Ribbon Selection Committee. These grants not only support innovative, community-driven projects but also help recipients advance toward Sustainable Jersey or Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification.

About Sustainable Jersey

Sustainable Jersey is a nonprofit organization that provides tools, training and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability initiatives. In the face of critical challenges, such as the climate crisis, environmental pollution and a widening equity divide, Sustainable Jersey empowers New Jersey municipalities and schools to be part of the solution.

To date, participants have successfully implemented and documented over 27,900 sustainability actions, and the program has awarded more than $8.4 million in grants to support community-based projects that build healthier, more sustainable futures across the state. www.SustainableJersey.com; www.SustainableJerseySchools.com

Announcement: Curbside Recycling Program

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) is pleased to announce the implementation of Automatic Side Load (ASL) service beginning August 1, 2025.

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) is pleased to announce the implementation of Automatic Side Load (ASL) service beginning August 1, 2025.

ASL service utilizes 95-gallon wheeled carts with lids which will replace the blue barrels or rectangular carts currently in use. You are receiving your new cart in advance of the start of the program which is August 1, 2025. You should continue using your existing blue containers until your first recycling pick-up in August at which time you MUST use your new cart. The cart delivered to you has a serial number and barcode linked to your address. If you should move out of your address, the cart must remain for the new resident. You may keep your old totes and bins if you wish, however they can no longer be used for curbside recycling once ASL service begins on August 1. You can recycle your old blue containers by placing them in the new cart for pick-up.

If you have any questions regarding this new program, please contact your local Recycling Coordinator in your Municipality.

On collection day please follow these ASL rules:

  • No materials left on the ground or next to the cart will be picked up by the ASL vehicle.

  • The cart must be easily accessible from the street at a minimum 4 ft clear on both sides

  • Place the cart at the curbline in front of the curb or on top of the curb with the silver pick-up bar on the front of the cart facing the street and the wheels facing your home.

Please continue to follow all municipal recycling guidelines and rules for the type of materials you can put in the cart for pick-up. The carts are for single stream comingled materials so all your approved recyclables can be placed in the cart.

Curbside Recycling Do’s & Don’ts:

DO:

  • Place glass bottles, jars, plastic containers (#1 & #2, aluminum cans, steels cans, tin cans, cardboard, and all mixed paper and newspapers in your cart.)

DON’T: (Note: Any evidence of the following will deny pick-up of the container)

  • No food waste, hazardous or flammable materials, chemicals, hot embers, construction debris or household trash may be put in the cart.

  • No leaves, brush, plastic bags, textiles, batteries, tires, electronics, computers or white metal goods can be put in the cart.

Mayor's Message - Spring 2025

It’s Spring and we are back in our yards, with our spring projects and getting ready for another year of cutting the grass…

It’s Spring and we are back in our yards, with our spring projects and getting ready for another year of cutting the grass. The DPW did a great job with the snow this year and my back appreciates that it wasn’t too bad of a snow season.

At Borough Hall, we have been busy working on a number of projects to improve and enhance Middlesex. Budget season is in full-swing, and I ask all of our residents to pay attention to both the municipal and school budgets. That is the best way to see how your tax dollars are being used. The Borough has really taken a hard stance on expenditures and although not a flat budget the increase on the municipal end will be significantly less than last year.

Some updates:

The Fireman’s Carnival will not be held this year. Last year’s situation was unsafe and we have yet to find the right combination of event activities/times etc. with projected costs to make this the fundraiser that it is meant to be. In the meantime, it is important for people to support our volunteer Firemen with their remaining fundraising activities. Please be as generous as your means allow.

The Beautification Committee is now a part of the Culture and Arts Committee. This is a logical merger and we look forward to even more activities from this expanded Committee.

We are looking forward to the opening of the new Middlesex History Room at the Library. It has been a long time coming but it will be worth the wait.

There will be some upcoming changes to our Recycling Program as we are going to be required by Middlesex County to use provided cans for recycling. It’s a change in the way we do things, but is necessary and a requirement.

For 2025, we again have a Volunteers Recruitment Committee whose efforts are working will all of our volunteer groups to solicit new members. They have been doing an awesome job. Some additional information can be found here. https://www.middlesexboro-nj.gov/ local-volunteering Middlesex Borough and the Committee are hosting a Volunteer Fair. Come and learn more about opportunities and departments in our Borough where you can get involved to make our community stronger! Most of our volunteer organizations will be represented. Make it a point to visit. We need your help.

MIDDLESEX BOROUGH VOLUNTEER FAIR

May 3, 2025 - Middlesex Borough Library
10:00AM to 3:00PM
1300 Mountain Avenue

The Borough of Middlesex now has a Hometown Heroes Banner Program. This program honors Middlesex Borough residents and former residents who have served or are currently serving in any branch of the military. Go to https:// www.middlesexboro-nj.gov/latest-news/hometown-heroes-banner-program for more details.

Jason Bond, having served 20 years on the Shade Tree Commission was recognized by the Governing Body as a Pillar of the Community at the April 22, 2025 Council Meeting. Congratulations Jason on your many years of service to the borough on the Shade Tree Commission!

I have been notified by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities that they are sponsoring The Louis Bay 2nd Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. This information was publicized at the High School to all juniors and seniors who plan to continue their education after high school to apply for this scholarship. I appointed a committee to select one statewide semi-finalist from the Borough. Jasleen Parmar has been selected as Middlesex Borough’s semi-finalist and her essay will now be forwarded to the League Headquarters in Trenton to be reviewed and potentially be awarded as one of 15 finalists or as one of three winners. Good luck Jasleen!

That’s all for now. We have a lot to do and time is at a premium as we continue to work to do what is right for Middlesex.

Please come to the council meetings. It’s the best way to keep current on things.

Mayor Jack Mikolajczyk

self-care pantry initiative: Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group

The Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group is taking a significant step toward addressing a vital community need with their latest project: a Self-Care Pantry. Co-leaders of the group have announced plans to install a new pantry dedicated to collecting and distributing essential self-care items for those in need.

This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution to a growing concern in the community. The pantry will be located near the existing mini food pantry, near the Middlesex Borough Library, creating a convenient hub for residents to access both food and self-care essentials. Items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, and lotion will be available for individuals and families who are struggling. These are small items but can make a significant difference in someone’s sense of wellbeing.

The project is set to launch in the spring of 2025, with the assistance of the Department of Public Works (DPW) for the installation. The Girl Scouts are calling on the community to support this effort by donating self-care items to stock the pantry. This initiative not only addresses an immediate need but also fosters a spirit of giving and community support.

By creating this self-care pantry, the Middlesex Girl Scout Junior Group is demonstrating the power of young leaders to make a lasting impact. Their dedication to identifying a problem and implementing a sustainable solution is an inspiring example of community service in action.

For those interested in contributing to this meaningful project, donations of self-care items can be dropped off at the Volunteer Fair on May 3, 2025 at Middlesex Borough Library.  Once the pantry is open, community members are invited to give what they can and take what they need. Together, we can ensure that everyone in our community has access to self-care essentials.

Meet Your Local Heroes:  The Volunteers of the Middlesex Fire Department

The Middlesex Fire Department responded to 468 calls for service in 2024. Did you know Middlesex Borough has no paid firefighters? Every one of our 59 members are “Volunteers” . Our members donate their time to serve their community. Just a few benefits of joining the Middlesex Fire Department are no cost to you for State & Federal training, department issued gear, & uniforms. We also offer LOSAP (Length of Service Awards Program) which is a retirement account for eligible volunteers. If you meet our department requirements you will receive a stipend in your account annually that can be withdrawn upon retirement. The FD budget committee is also in negotiations with the borough for a response per emergency call stipend for all eligible volunteers that would also be awarded annually.

Volunteering as a firefighter is not just about putting out fires; it's about being there for people in their most vulnerable moments. It's about providing support, comfort, and a sense of security during times of crisis.

The chance to help others, to be part of a dedicated team, and to face challenges head-on is a very rewarding experience. Many of our current and past members have also pursued one of the emergency services as a career because of their experience as a Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, by becoming a 911 Dispatcher, Police Officer, Paid Career Firefighter, EMT, or Paramedic.

Come join our members at the Volunteer Fair on May 3, 2025, between 10am and 3 pm at the Middlesex Borough Library to learn how you can get involved.
