Aqualytes Synchronized Swimming Team is One of a Kind

Fresh off of their 50th Anniversary, the Aqualytes Synchronized Swim Team is a recreational team that is inclusive of all genders ages 5-17 with basic to advanced swim skills.

The Aqualytes are unique in that they are the only Synchronized Swimming Team in New Jersey!

Fresh off of their 50th Anniversary, the Aqualytes Synchronized Swim Team is a recreational team that is inclusive of all genders ages 5-17 with basic to advanced swim skills. Synchronized swimming combines elements of dance, swimming, and gymnastics. All swimmers must be members of the pool to join the team. There is a fee to join the team. Please contact the Team Coaches with any questions: middlesex.aqualytes@gmail.com

Visit their Facebook page: Middlesex Aqualytes
Instagram: Middlesex.Aqualytes

From our Coaches: Middlesex Aqualytes is a recreational team. Synchronized swim is almost like a dance routine, however, in the water. Team members are taught different arm and leg movements, called “figures,” matched up with designated music. Team members are put together in groups to perform. It is not as hard as it sounds! Each year we pick a theme for the season such as Decades. Children as young as five can join and they love the team! We put the music and swimming together and have an amazing, non-competitive performance at the end of the season!

Learn What to Do in a Cardiac or Stroke Emergency

Do you know CPR or what to do in a cardiac arrest or stroke situation? Your neighbors do, thanks to the OEM/Library series, “You are the Help Until the Help Arrives," taught by the amazing staff of MedicZero Inc.

March and April 2023: BYSTANDER, HANDS-ONLY free training programs

Do you know CPR or what to do in a cardiac arrest or stroke situation? Your neighbors do, thanks to the OEM/Library series, “You are the Help Until the Help Arrives," taught by the amazing staff of MedicZero Inc.

In the United States, less than 50% of individuals who go into cardiac arrest in public are given CPR before emergency services arrive.

In response to the growing need for CPR literacy, Middlesex Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Middlesex Library continue to offer *free* bystander CPR and Stroke recognition classes to ALL Middlesex residents ages 13 and up!

Since its inception in 2022, the OEM/Library program, “You Are the Help until Help Arrives”: Free Training Programs for Bystander Emergency Preparedness,” has trained over 200 Middlesex Borough community members. Those numbers will continue to grow, with two new program sessions offered this spring:

Training by MedicZero

Tuesday, March 21, 2023

  • 6:30pm – 8:30pm

  • Library Community Room

Bystander Hands Only CPR and Stroke Recognition

Tuesday, April 18, 2023

  • 6:30pm – 8:30pm

  • Library Community Room

Download the program flyer (pdf)

All classes are free and limited to Middlesex residents only

  • Ages 13 yrs and up

  • Advance registration is REQUIRED

  • Classes can accommodate up to 55 participants

  • First come, first served

  • Snacks will be served

Training is provided by MedicZero, a nonprofit organization of college medical students across the country. With the guidance of board certified and FACEP designated physicians, Medic Zero “seeks to enable bystanders with the confidence to recognize emergencies and initiate care, encourage the delivery of skillful, evidence-based care by providers, and construct community paramedicine initiatives to improve the prehospital landscape.” (https://www.mediczero.org/our-vis)

Feedback from the five emergency preparedness classes that have been offered through this OEM/Library program has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I attended their class in December and highly recommend everyone take this CPR class. The recent injury and recovery of Damar Hamlin is a great example of what can happen if someone is aware of how to use CPR to assist someone who has suffered cardiac arrest. 13 year olds are permitted and I encourage them to attend as well. I am recommending this training to everyone I know!”
— M. Hompesch
“The CPR training class was very informative. I have never taken a hands on CPR class, even though I graduated with a Health Science Degree. Everything was well explained, and presentation was good.”
— L. Ryan
“Thank you for offering this very much needed course. The presentation and the presenters were wonderful and we loved that there was hands on at the end of the course.”
— R. Coco
“This program is another great example of the value that our OEM continues to bring to our residents. I was particularly impressed with the MedicZero team who provides the training. Lastly, a big thank you to our OEM and our Library for collaborating on hosting this program.”
— Councilman Michael Conahan, Middlesex Borough Council President

You are the help until help arrives

For every minute that a bystander does not administer CPR, a cardiac arrest victim’s chances of survival decrease 10%. YOU can change that. YOU can be the hero your neighbors, friends, and family need when a cardiac disaster strikes.

Your neighbors know CPR. Shouldn’t you? Register for one of these seminars today. Questions? Email bbenson553@yahoo.com or call the Middlesex Library at (732) 356-6602, ext. 4.

* Participants under 18 must provide written Authorization of Parent/Guardian

Pool Logo Contest Winners Announced

We are excited to announce that we have chosen a logo for the Pool. Congratulations to John Sousa and Katrina Alcalde as our Logo Contest Winners!

Logo Contest

We are excited to announce that we have chosen a logo for the Pool! Thank you to everyone that submitted entries for the contest! This is the first logo in the Pool’s 50+ year history!

The original logo entry was submitted by John Sousa, a Middlesex resident. The logo was then presented to the Middlesex High School Visual Arts Club for further enhancement. It was a very exciting project for the students! We received many great logos from the students and narrowed down the final logo to one that was created by Katrina Alcalde. Katrina is a Sophomore and in her second year in the Visual Arts Club. Katrina’s submission was adopted as our final logo. Congratulations to John Sousa and Katrina Alcalde as our Logo Contest Winners!

Thank you to MHS for your assistance in re-creating the official logo for the Middlesex Community Pool. A special thanks to Mr. Dow, Visual Arts Club teacher, for his hard work and guidance with the students to bring this project and final logo to fruition.

Mayor’s Message: Transparency and Public Meetings (Part 1)

Residents will from time to time inquire about a problem, issue or circumstance of their concern. Unfortunately my reply may ask, why did they not go to the public hearing to voice their viewpoint or issue?

Over my term as your mayor and reflecting back on my years on council, residents will from time to time inquire about a problem, issue or circumstance of their concern. Unfortunately my reply may ask, why did they not go to the public hearing to voice their viewpoint or issue?

Our governing body is tasked under rigid laws and rules to scrutinize every issue brought before them in the public forum. The various agenda and other items are reviewed through careful consideration and deliberation while engaging in the due diligence process. Surprisingly, few residents show up for these meetings (as well as our Joint Land Use Board among other meetings). Is this an anomaly or plain apathy?

Being asked about allowing two-family housing next door to a residential zone, road paving on my street or the status of Creighton Lake water quality harkens back to these issues being covered and voted upon in past meetings. Since all residents have full access to our public meetings, many questions would be answered.

Rules of Decorum

Those wishing to address our governing body must first come up to the microphone and be recognized by the mayor.

  • State your name and address.

  • Speak in a respectful manner.

  • Comments may be limited to several minutes until all have spoken. More time may be given depending on circumstances.

  • Questions may be asked for clarification by the speaker.

Council members should refrain from getting into a Q and A dialog as this is a public comment period. The mayor will use discretion to answer questions at the meeting or elect to seek further review then respond to the speaker at a later date by email, phone call or a follow up at a subsequent meeting.

Understanding the Process

According to N.J. State Statute, notice must be given to all scheduled public meetings at least 48 hours in advance regarding time, location and agenda.  Understanding the process of how to participate and what to ask in a public forum is simple as you can see.  Your participation will lift the veil of apprehension on important topics.

Please remember, as much as you want your question answered and voice heard, we also want to hear from you. Keeping informed allows all concerned to provide efficient deliberations which will lead to a favorable conclusion and vote. This is the best format to keep informed (not social platforms). Communication is the key. Please note that we all live in town, we all pay taxes and probably have similar concerns.

As a matter of fact, this is so important a topic to preserve our national form of government trickling down to a local level, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has put out a bulletin with much related information entitled: “Guide to Participation in Council Meetings.“ Public meetings promote the various stakeholders to come together to share their concerns, issues and viewpoints or just for information gathering.

Reviewing the available agenda beforehand may trigger an important point which may need to be discussed before us. There may be a specific agenda item on a topic reflecting how payment of a capital item will be paid and expensed for instance. The governing body must be prudent as to how we spend our tax dollars. Again, this is all about communication as we must balance wants and needs. Well managed municipalities provide easy access for issues within the community with collaborative decisions and policy.

The bottom line is that this process will ultimately build a trusting sense of cooperation and community.

Thomas Jefferson stated in his many letters regarding this topic, “involving the public will ensure that their ideas and concerns are thoroughly considered resulting in better decisions.“

Thank you,
Mayor John L. Madden

Mayor's Message: Winter 2023

From the desk of Mayor John L. Madden, a summary of Borough news for January/February 2023…

A New Year and a Snowless Winter

Who could ever imagine that a record has been set for a total lack of the white stuff? To the dismay of snow removal folks and school kids looking forward to a few days off this season, our small business owners are grateful that despite inflation, supply chain interruptions and personnel hiring problems, this has been somewhat of a bright spot.

Borough Administrator

However, within these hallowed halls, the new year brings a welcome addition to Borough operations with the hiring of Michael LePlace as full time Business Administrator. A well-seasoned professional, I believe he will bring his administrative acumen to handle the projects and challenges that Joe Costa, our Interim Business Administrator has been doing. I want to thank Joe for the extraordinary job he has been doing especially handling his many other duties. I know he is really looking forward to his well- deserved retirement along with his wife, Nancy.

The Backyard Bonfire

Fond memories abound as I harken back to my high school football games. As a member of our marching band at North Plainfield High School our biggest rival was South Plainfield High School where the traditional game was played every year on Thanksgiving Day. The centerpiece on that day was the bonfire. Such a conflagration added luster to the rivalry.

So, leave your marshmallows home and please join us for the Middlesex Borough Backyard Bonfire at Mountain View Park on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 2-7 pm. The event is hosted by our Recreation Department with the participation of MegaBites where tickets may be purchased. Read more about this event on our website here.

Community Day

Another popular event is our traditional Community Day celebration. Unfortunately, this event was suspended in the past due to Covid concerns. Since things are opening up in the Borough, we can now look forward to the new year with planned activities in our new normal. There will be exciting things for everybody including vendors, restaurants, local bands, food trucks and tons of activities for the kids. The date is Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Mountain View Park from 1-8 pm. So mark your calendar for these two spectacular events.

The Presbyterian Church

We are awaiting for the phase 1 environmental report regarding the Presbyterian Church acquisition. The Phase 1 site assessment has recently concluded. We are hoping that there is good news for us. This site will be the new site for Recreation and our Seniors. The American Rescue Fund Grant will cover most of the purchase.

Council President

Lastly, I want to commend our new Council President, Mr. Michael Conahan for the superlative job he has done for his brief time on the council. The goal of a council president is to disseminate all information received from the mayor, business administrator and clerk to the council members in the pursuit of efficient communication. This process puts everybody on the same page, opens up the flow of ideas for deliberation at council meetings and minimizes challenges in handling subsequent projects and goals. I wish him much success in the future.

Thank You,

Mayor John L. Madden

Mayor’s Report: December 2022

Mayor Madden shares news about (1) the new Dog Park, (2) Creighton Lake water quality, and (3) the contamination plume from the Middlesex Sampling Plant.

Yes, it’s official !!

This week, on November 29, 2022, I formally dedicated the new Middlesex Borough Dog Park in a well attended ribbon-cutting ceremony. The park can accommodate small and large dogs separately.

In attendance were members of our Police Department including Chief Matthew Geist, Business Administrator Joe Costa, myself, DPW and Recreation personnel . In addition, council members and residents were there (with their dogs!).

A special thanks go out to our newest Councilman, Mr. Michael Conahan for spearing this project (with Council support) from idea to completion.

Creighton Lake Water Quality Update

11/07/2022

Most recent laboratory sampling of E. Coli

Sample from >> Results

  1. Dock near Dam >> 1,203.3 MPN/100ml

  2. Middle Dock >> 1,203.3 MPN/100ml

  3. Walking Bridge (footbridge) >> 410.6 MPN/100ml

  4. Dock near Walking Bridge (footbridge) >> 579.4 MPN/100ml

I also requested an E.Coli sample from Lake Nelson in Piscataway. This required an OPRA request.

11/07/2022

Sample Result >> 11.0 MPN/100ml

Again, all 4 samples are unacceptably high. In my opinion, our target should be set at water quality standards for primary contact recreational water (eventual goal) criteria as determined by the EPA, Office of Water 820-F-058. Page 49 (of 69) of the document reveals the estimated illness rates for E. Coli in fresh water which are below consistently tested values at the Creighton Lake.

Visits from the NJDEP and County Health Department

On November 3, 2022, the NJDEP division of Fish and Wildlife under Mr. Scott Collenberg (Senior Fisheries Biologist) came out to our lake to understand the impact of the large fish kill there last year for an electrofishing survey (capturing and measuring fish, etc.). this was in response to a strong email that I sent to the DEP Commissioner, Mr. Shawn Latorette et al.

Last week, Mickey Gross of the County Health Department, and other health officials there contacted me to determine the non-point contamination source. No sanitary leakage is emanating from our Borough lines according to Mr. Vidal of our DPW. The County will check with Piscataway.

Finally, we had a long virtual meeting late last week including the DEP, NJ American Water, the Borough Administrator, myself and others to discuss a resolve to our situation. Unfortunately, I found the meeting to be non-productive and ineffective. Gathering data, modeling and monitoring will not achieve our goals but prolong the problem.  I will continue to put pressure on the responsible party until we reach a satisfactory solution for Middlesex Borough.

Update from Contamination Plume From the Middlesex Sampling Plant

A Department of Army letter went out to residents on or about October 26, 2022 explaining this notification and identifying the water quality constituents within this low concentration plume of (VOC’s). Listed were carbon tetrachloride, chloroform (the breakdown of carbon tet.) and trichloroethylene.

According to this report, approximately 260 properties are listed (from the fact sheet) in lots and blocks. Said properties are identified as simply being located within the boundary of the plume with no suggestion of contaminated private wells. In fact most of these properties are being serviced by public water already.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Movement

According to Mr. Daniel Kennedy, Project Manager for the USACE, there is no current information regarding any horizontal movement of the plume. The vertical movement however has been identified as moving deeper into the bedrock- now measured at about 330 feet. Interestingly, no radiologicals which were prevalent in the MSP have been detected in this plume.

Mr. Kennedy stated that the wells above the plume are not affected but still should have their water tested for contaminants. If contamination is present (at any level), the Dept. of Health should be notified and subsequent testing will be performed. Measures will be taken, either providing bottled water or remediation equipment to be installed for the resident who may most likely be able to hookup to municipal water at no charge.

Properties: Permits Required

This notification subjects the properties who may install a well within the plume to a well and land use restriction requiring them to get a DEP permit and be aware of the limitations associated with the property.

By the way a public meeting was held on August 31, 2020 to present the groundwater investigation findings with a proposed plan to address the contamination.

For any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Daniel Kennedy directly. His cell number is 917-275-3373.

Thank you.
Mayor John L. Madden
