Residents’ Support Needed Saturday, August 5 at the Green Brook Flood Commission Meeting

Have you suffered from devastating flooding or know someone that has suffered from flooding in Middlesex Borough?

Saturday, Aug. 5 may be your last chance to get some answers.

Join us at the next Green Brook Flood Control Commission meeting on Saturday, August 5th, at 9:30 am at the American Legion Pavilion in Middlesex (see address in Google Maps). This will be the only live, in-person meeting and the only meeting in Middlesex in the foreseeable future.

The Green Brook Flood Control Commission (GBFCC), the US Army Corp of Engineers, and the construction company project leaders will have representatives present at this meeting to hear our concerns.

It’s time to ask the tough questions and demand answers:

  1. Why has work on the project stopped despite the US Army Corp of Engineers being funded approximately $467 million dollars almost two years ago (these are our tax dollars!)?

  2. Every day delayed, allows inflation to eat away at the federal funds awarded to the Army Corp!

  3. The funding received is more than enough to complete the Middlesex portion of the project. What obstacles are standing in the way of continued construction except for the state required 25%?

  4. What is delaying the NJ state required 25% of the project budget funds which are supposed to be provided by the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection?

  5. Have the lobbyists, which are paid for by the GBFCC, regrouped now that federal funding has been provided, and refocused their efforts on getting the state funds needed to continue construction and complete the project?

  6. The project has stopped and is at a standstill. Why?? How long will this delay last?

  7. The final phase of the project, along the Green Brook, was scheduled to begin construction (as of 18 March 2019) in 2023-2024 and now has NO start date and, therefore, no completion date

  8. Simple access needed on properties in town has been denied by residents/business owners and some of these issues have been in the court system for years. This has also stopped construction in areas.

  9. Why is there no sense of urgency for the completion of this project? Severe weather systems are increasing in the Northeast and are wreaking havoc on communities. It’s only a matter of time until Middlesex is inundated with another flooding storm. (We dodged a bullet from the storm system the weekend of July 8th which flooded the Hudson River Valley and many New England states – All just am a short distance north of us!!

Our homes, our properties, our businesses, our town and the safety of our families are at risk!

The only way to get real, substantive answers is through local pressure by Middlesex residents. This meeting may be our only opportunity to get those answers and jump start the flood wall project.

The danger is real. Attend and make your voice be heard.

The Borough needs your support on Saturday, August 5th, at 9:30 am at the American Legion Pavilion in Middlesex to get this vital initiative moving again.
