Message from the Mayor: Recent Borough Fires Prompt Important Safety Reminders

Whether one believes in the deleterious effects of climate change or not, I think we all can agree that the excessive heat and humidity has plagued us this season like the spotted lantern fly invasion. With more outdoor activities planned, we are reminded of the need for additional precautions and considerations for our welfare and safety. In addition, those with health issues must deal with unsafe levels of ozone while outdoors.

So far, we have had two fires within the Borough recently. Therefore, I am providing some reminders regarding fire prevention and safety.

Probably, the most obvious issues are concerning outdoor grills.

Do not put a grill on dry/dead grass. A stray spark emanating from the grill can easily start a fire. Also place grills well away from buildings and other structures such as deck railings. Please keep in mind any low overhanging branches or roofs could catch fire as well. Leaving the grill unattended is the perfect recipe for a fire.

Discarded matches, cleaning solvents or hot coals could be a source of ignition. Potted plants are not the appropriate final resting place for discarded cigarette butts. Keeping all combustibles away from a grill such as wooden utensils, paper products, plastic bags, food packaging, etc. while cooking is always a good practice.

Many residents who are fans of gardens as I am, probably have experienced that using peat moss or a similar mulch can become another source of ignition if its gets hot enough.

Although legal in the Borough, fire pits have become very popular. Only clean wood should be used. A water source must be readily available nearby. The Fire Department does not permit material other than clean wood to be burned such as household refuse, construction debris or yard waste. As a matter of fact, if a complaint is received by the Fire Department, they will immediately respond. They have the discretion of the Fire Officer or Fire Marshal to issue a violation for the use of said prohibited material. In addition, a violation may be issued if the fire is creating a nuisance or hazard. Code enforcement will issue summonses resulting in fines for violations of any fire ordinance.

Please remember, inattentive or careless activity resulting in smoke or fire complaints will triggers a quick response from our First Responders. With all the gear that each member must wear, especially fire and police, a significant challenge is created dealing with this burden as well as not specifically knowing what they will face when they get to the scene. I cannot imagine such an arduous and demanding situation as they are put in harms way. We all must be very aware that physical distress and or injury (or worse) may be heightened due to this severe weather. Let’s all pitch in to keep one another safe.

Enjoy the rest of your Summer.
