The Middlesex PD supports all our Borough volunteers and donates their own time too! Chief Matthew P. Geist stated, “The Middlesex Borough Police Department has a rich history of working closely with our volunteer organizations. Our officers have been honored to work beside the dedicated volunteers who serve the Middlesex Office of Emergency Management, the Middlesex Fire Department, the Middlesex Borough Rescue Squad, the Middlesex Domestic Violence Response Team, and the Middlesex Borough Municipal Drug Alliance.

“Our emergency service workers, along with countless other community members, contribute to the welfare of our community through their selfless sacrifices. From flood waters to food drives, National Night Out to overnight structure fires, our partnerships with the Borough’s volunteer organizations allow comprehensive and effective delivery of emergency services and community care taking. We strongly encourage the members of our community to get involved in these rewarding groups.”

The Department shared a whole collection of photos from recent volunteer events and activities!

Volunteers Propel "The Alliance" to Prevent Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

The Middlesex Borough Committee for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, informally referred to as “The Alliance,” was approved by the Mayor and Council in 1990 and functions under the guidelines of the Governor’s Council on Drug and Alcohol (GCADA).

To be successful the Alliance needs residents to represent all areas of the community especially those who have students in the middle and high school.

The purpose of the Alliance is to assist in organizing and coordinating community events and informative and educational school programs for the purpose of reducing alcoholism, under-age drinking, vaping, and smoking, drug abuse resulting in the reduction of crimes committed directly as a result of these addictions.

– Never think that what you have to offer is insignificant. There will always be someone out there who needs what you have to offer.

Nikitas Kasiotis

“What inspired me to volunteer? If there is an emergency in my community, sitting home will not help. I want to be out there in action helping people. OEM offers a great opportunity to help. I enjoy meeting so many people in town and other volunteers I have learned so many valuable skills and see the world through a different lens. So give it a try, volunteering is a good act and you will benefit.“

Stuart Teitelbaum

“I enjoy working with people who have a common interest with helping others in an emergency. JOIN…..you get back more than you give.”

Gary D’Aloisio

“I like the feeling of helping. My advice is to get involved with any of the Emergency Services.”

Juan Pereira

“Volunteering was one of the best decisions I made after moving into Middlesex Boro. I knew that I wanted to find a way to connect with the community and get involved. I had to step out of my comfort zone when joining OEM, but in the end, I gained, and continue to gain a lot of enrichment from it. I also knew that it is always great to have people from different walks of life contribute. I bring valuable and needed skills into the organization such as being a bilingual Spanish speaker. Being able to help the Community be a better place, all while making friends within the organization, has brought a lot of fulfillments into my life.”

James Green Sr.

“When I moved back into Middlesex in 1998, I knew I wanted to give back to the Boro, so I joined OEM and Fire Police.”

Volunteer Fred Hoth, OEM

“…as I planned for upcoming retirement, I started looking for ways to give back to the community…”

Fred shared a story with us to illustrate his origin and experience with the Borough OEM.

“During hurricane Sandy we were without power for 10 days and were thankful to receive ice and bottled water from the Borough, distributed by the Office of Emergency Management. While grateful for the supplies, I didn’t know anything about the group, let alone that all members were volunteers.

Fast forward several years and as I planned for upcoming retirement, I started looking for ways to give back to the community. A town newsletter included an article on Middlesex Borough OEM and called for volunteers. Remembering the impact they had on us in Sandy’s aftermath I decided that was the organization I wanted to join. Just as I was ready to inquire about becoming a member, Covid hit and shut down much of our world.

Thanks to the prolonged shutdown, volunteering was put on the back burner. Shortly after the world re-opened, I signed up for a CPR class at the library, which I found out was sponsored by our OEM team. That re-ignited the spark the original article had created and after the class I spoke to a couple of the officers about joining. Hearing from them what the OEM organization does confirmed to me that this was the group I wanted to be part of.

In the time since I joined, we thankfully haven’t been called on for any major incidents, but OEM has partnered with MedicZero to provide CPR and first aid courses for community members, expanded the CPR program to home Blues Jays football games, and is working with other community organizations and the school district on additional educational programs to help residents be better prepared in an emergency.

I hope these are the only types of activities we are involved in, but it’s reassuring to know that Middlesex Borough OEM is ready and able to assist residents in any emergency situation thanks to dedicated volunteers, and I am proud to be part of the organization.”

Volunteer Natalie Nguyen, OEM

“The prospect of developing new skills and establishing connections with fellow volunteers drew me towards volunteering…”

Natalie was kind enough to answer many questions for us! She has much to share about her volunteer experience in Middlesex:

1. What inspired you to become a volunteer?

“I chose to become a volunteer because of my desire to engage in activities that not only benefited me but also made a positive impact on others. The prospect of developing new skills and establishing connections with fellow volunteers drew me towards volunteering as a fulfilling and enriching pursuit.”

2. What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

“I enjoy the satisfaction of giving back to my community and assisting others the most by volunteering. Knowing that I am making a positive impact on those in my surroundings fills me with a sense of accomplishment, and contributing to a cause I deeply care about leaves me feeling fulfilled.”

3. What skills have you gained or developed through volunteering?

“Volunteering has equipped me with enhanced communication skills, fostering a greater comfort level when collaborating with others, particularly in team settings. This gradual process has bolstered my self-confidence and nurtured the growth of my leadership abilities. Consequently, I've honed my capacity to adapt to new challenges and problem-solving situations.”

4. What advice would you give to someone interested in volunteering?

“I recommend people interested in volunteering to seek out volunteer opportunities that are aligned with their interests and passions, as this not only enhances enjoyment but can also be personally enriching. Starting locally is a prudent approach, allowing them to discover volunteer roles that resonate with their interests. While the initial steps may feel daunting, not knowing where to begin, embracing this uncertainty can lead to more experience and a broader perspective.“

Volunteer LynDonna Charles, OEM

“Being a retired US Army soldier the OEM mission and values aligned greatly with my skills and passion for community and social impact…”

We asked LynDonna what inspires her to volunteer. She responded,

“As a passionate individual with a deep commitment to helping make a positive impact in the community, when I relocated to the Middlesex County area in Dec 2022, I started researching volunteer opportunities and organizations. I was excited when I came upon the Middlesex OEM, being that I have health with emergency response in my previous career.

Being a retired US Army soldier the OEM mission and values aligned greatly with my skills and passion for community and social impact as well as the ability to work effectively in diverse teams and make a difference for others.

I gave the OEM office a call and the members were very welcoming and supportive. I am happy to be part of a team of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to understanding the community needs and making a tangible difference in our community and the people who live in it. Helping my community is very humane and empathic and I get great joy from serving others.”

OEM Volunteers Train for Emergency Food and Water Distribution

Volunteers are at the heart of all we do! The Borough’s all-volunteer OEM has regular meetings to prepare in advance to deal with the chaos that may happen during an emergency.

These photos show our volunteers during a recent exercise where OEM simulated the organization and communication required (1) from the emergency operations center, (2) from the mobile command post, and (3) on-site distributing food, water, and even shelter. For example, OEM utilized our trainings to spring into action last summer during the water main break.

Volunteers Maggie Schneider and Gina Carbonaro OEM

“…think about what organization aligns with your passions and skills…”

Did you know our OEM works tirelessly preparing to care for residents in case of an emergency? For example, when a disaster or significant event occurs, the Borough’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will coordinate necessary shelters within the Borough. We asked two of our volunteers, “What advice would you give to someone who is interested in volunteering?”

Maggie and Gina answered,
”Our advice for someone who wants to become a volunteer is to think about what organization aligns with your passions and skills and what volunteer work would be the most fulfilling to you. Then look for local opportunities through towns website and social media. Contact the organizations directly to get more information on what they do specifically and what would be required of you. Volunteering is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a positive impact on others, so take the time to find the right opportunity!”

Volunteer William “Bill” San Phillips, Recreation Department

“For me it’s seeing the kids discover the joy of playing baseball…”

Bill San Phillips, despite lacking prior coaching experience, selflessly coached his great nephew’s team for the past several years. At the conclusion of his inaugural T-ball season, he returned expressing gratitude for the Recreation Department’s encouragement to take on the coaching role. This past season he tried his hand at helping to coach his nephew’s 3/4 grade basketball team. The Recreation Department affectionately calls him “Uncle Bill” due to his selfless dedication to the children of Middlesex.

We asked Bill two questions and he graciously responded to both! First, “What advice would you give to someone who is interested in volunteering?”

“It’s a great experience. When I look back on my life it’s up there as one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences.”

“What do you enjoy most about volunteering?“

“For me it’s seeing the kids discover the joy of playing baseball. The look on their faces when they catch and hit a baseball for the first time is amazing. Sports is a great way for children to learn life lessons in a fun and healthy way. I love that I am a part of the joy they feel being part of a team, making new friends and trying their best.”

The Recreation Department extends its heartfelt appreciation to all our dedicated volunteers – your invaluable contributions are the backbone of our success.
